Japanese nicknames can be made by simply picking the first few syllables of your first or last name and adding one of these sounds to it:
Chan
Pon
Run (soft r)
Tan
Chi
Pi
The goal of the nickname is to make it sound cute.
For example:
My japanese given name is Kouya ( 倖弥 ), so a nickname for me would be Kouchi or Koupi. This can be used with given and surnames. There are other ways to make nicknames but this is the most common and easiest way.

The smell of food flooded my senses as I shuffled out of the hallway. Soft grumbling came from behind me followed by a hand gripping the back of my shirt. I turned my head to the tug while rubbing the sleepiness from my eyes.

The boy behind me yawned, "G'morning."

"Morning Hajichan, Mama woke you up too?"

Hajime nodded his head with a pout across his lips. It was Seven in the morning, earlier than we usually get up at so it wasn't hard to understand why he's moody. We were told yesterday that we'd had guests coming over for breakfast today, Mama had already gotten Hajime and I dressed for the day, she was now setting the table with a wide grin on her face. Her long black hair was up in a bun and she wore a simple purple floral shirt and black leggings. Mama was always pretty, I loved seeing her smile.

"Hey kiddos, the Oikawas' should be here in a few. Want to finish setting the table for me while I go get some other things done?" She crouched down to our level while she spoke. "It would be a huge help!"

I nodded as Hajime yawned out a response, "Sure thing Aunty."

Mama ruffled our hair before walking into the kitchen with a little skip. I smiled at her excitement. Truth be told, I have never been good with new people. I got really nervous and sometimes my tummy started to hurt when I talked to new people, but when I see Mama all happy I feel better about it. Hajime's mama and my mama could be heard laughing in the kitchen while I placed the wooden chopsticks on the table. I looked to my right to the clock hung up on the wall; It was eight in the morning now. I looked towards the window by the door and saw a blue car pull up to the curb near our house. I tugged on Hajime's shirt and pointed to the window.

"What do you think they'll be like Hajichan?"

Hajime turned his body around and looked outside the window with his brows scrunched as he thought for a minute before he shrugged, "Hopefully they're nice?"

"Hopefully," I kept my hand on his shirt and followed him while he finished setting his portion of the table.

Not even a few seconds after he placed the last bowl on the table the doorbell rang. Mama sped walked out of the kitchen with a bright smile, she used her right arm to wave Hajime and I to come by her to welcome our guests. I felt my tummy twist into a knot when Mama reached for the door knob. I quickly stepped behind Hajime, only letting one half of my face peek out from around his shoulder while my hands held the back of his shirt.

"Enachi! Thank you for having us, sorry for intruding," an older woman with long brown hair flung her arms around Mama, the sleeves of her blue sundress swished around.

Mama flung her head back and laughed while she hugged the woman back, "Misutan! Please, no need to be formal with me!"

The two giggle to themselves before pulling back from their hug. The woman stepped to the side revealing three children behind her. Two girls and one boy.
