Ma'lani POV
Monday morning"Ma'lani wake up. You've got school in an hour." I hear my mom loudly yell while banging on my bedroom door.
"Fuck this." I groan lowly rolling out of bed.
I drag myself to my bathroom and quickly strip out of my pajamas and get in the shower. I get out and finish up my hygiene. I enter my room to see my uniform on my bed.
"Ugly ass uniform." I say kicking the bed angrily.
I quickly put on my uniform and spray some perfume on. I grab my backpack. I walk out into the kitchen to see my mom making breakfast.
"Eat fast. You're walking to school. It's a 10 minute walk." she say glancing back at me.
I grunt in response.
"Words Ma'lani." she say placing my food down in front of me and pushing the back of my head.
"Okay momma." I say digging into my food.
I eat my food quickly.
"Later mom." I say standing by the door with my bags in hand.
"Goodbye Ma'lani. I will be picking you up after I get off work." she says dismissively.
I leave the house and get on the elevator. I finally make it out of the building and start my walk to school. My mother forced me to learn the way over the few weeks we've been here so I already know the way. I decide to call Amari. We've gotten pretty close over these last three weeks. I call her it's rings two times before she picks up.
"Yo Lani it's mad early and you calling me." she says groggily into the phone.
"Now you know how I feel when you been calling me at 6 while you walked to school." I say rolling my eyes at her.
"I only did that a few times. Im skipping today though." she says cutting on her light.
"Yeah but you still did." I say continuing to walk.
"Whatever. Im coming over after school. So your parents can get used to me. So I can steal you and you can come to stay with me sometimes." she smirking into the camera.
"Bet. I missed you. You my only friend out here. And my mom thinks you one of the "Non-dirty Bronx" people so she'll let me come" I say smiling at her.
"You gonna make more at school. And, imma introduce you to my friends one day." she says walking into her bathroom.
"I'm not looking forward to this school. I think it's mostly whites." I say gagging playfully.
"Oh nah. You'll find some cultured people I bet." she says laughing slightly while brushing her teeth.
"Probably. Imma call you when I get out. Im at the school."
"Alright bet. Safety." she says into the phone.
"Safety." I say mocking her before hanging up.
I walk into the school. Looking around surprisingly there seems to be a good amount of black students. I walk to the front office. Walking in a see a lady sitting down at a desk.
"Hello Im Ma'lani Miller and today is my first day." I say walking up to her desk.
"Oh hello Ms. Miller. I have your schedule and chrome book right here." she says handing them to me over the desk.
"Mr. Brown right is is gonna be your guide for today since you're new." she saying point over to the dark-skin boy sitting in the chair by her.
He stands up and walks from behind her desk and shakes my hand.
"Hello Im Julius and I'm going to be your tour guide today." he says letting go out my hand. "Let's go"
He quickly walks out of the office with me behind him.
"Alright so we got the same schedule. So just go where I go." he says walking into a classroom.
I walk in right after him to see him speaking to the teacher.
"Hello Ms. Ma'lani. Im glad you could make it." she says smiling over at me. "Im Ms. Gale."
"Hello Ms. Gale nice to meet you." I say smiling at her.
"Go find a seat. We can introduce you at the end of class." she says pointing to the desk.
"Okay." I say walking and sitting down in a random seat.
The school day goes by quickly after this. It was filled with boring lectures and annoying introductions. The school is okay. It's not bad. Lunch was chill. I actually sat with Julius and his friends they were pretty cool. The finally bell rings. I quickly jump up and head out side. Searching for my moms car. I find it and hurriedly get in. Slamming the door and releasing a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"So Ma'lani, how was school?" my mom says pulling off.
"It was good. Nice school. I don't hate it ." I say leaning my head on the window.
"That's good." she says glancing over at me.
"How was your first day at work?" I ask genuinely.
"All Im gonna say is I'm glad your father makes as much as he does because without we'd be struggling." she sighs.
"Oh." I say. "Um can Amari come over today. I wanna help her with some homework."
"Yes of course she is always welcome." my mother says smiling at the mention of Amari.
"Thanks." I say leaning my head on the window again.
"Im gonna go to grocery store quickly to grab some things. Nap if you need cause we're not going home right away." she says continuing to drive.
"Okay." I say putting in my head phones and closing my eyes.
