My parents insisted that I stay up for the late dinner, but I was just as insistent that I was too tired to do so. After many promises that I wasn't upset about the secret adoption - I had bigger fish to fry - they conceded and said they'd be retiring to bed themselves.

Obviously, I thought about how dangerous this could be. Walking into the hands of the group that had been evading trained wolves when my only current talent was akin to that of the Flash was a clear death sentence. But, I had no doubt that Lucas would do everything to stop me from going and would do nothing to truly save Peter.

I knew that I wouldn't be shifting into my wolf - it had been too long and I was fast enough without it - so I packed a backpack with anything I could think of - snacks from the pantry, gauze pads and ace wrap that had been in my bathroom for years, water, a flashlight. After that, I snuck an old atlas from the living room bookshelf and made notes on a scratch sheet of paper for where I was going. The phone signal in the woods of North Carolina would likely be doubtful at best.

I left the original ransom note for my parents to find on my old dresser and then made my way out of the house.

Lucas laid in his bed, trying to calm his racing mind. After dropping Eve off at her parents' he spent the evening at his parents' house. His dad and him kept quiet about everything during dinner but the moment his mom took their plates they were off to his dad's office to go over everything and put together a list of Alphas to call. It was a very long evening.

He knew he was supposed to be focusing on the threats to his pack but there was one thing on his mind that was above all else.

He had found his mate.

All those years of waiting finally seemed worth it and had ended with being handed the woman of his dreams - quite literally, as Eve had taken a shining roll in a few of them when Lucas was a teenager and still sporadically showed up ever since. He wanted nothing more than to have her in his arms now just to hold her close and know that he never had to let go. That kiss that they shared at the bluffs kept replaying in his mind. Sure, he had kissed a girl before, but it had been nothing like that. The warmth and desire and flames hitting his skin everywhere that she touched was something he never could have prepared for.

I need to go take a cold shower he thought to himself. Just as he was climbing out of bed to do so he spotted headlights pulling up to his house.

An Alphas work is never done. His thoughts made him groan as he slipped on a pair of sweats and headed downstairs.

"What do you mean she's gone?" He knew that his voice resembled that of an outraged Alpha who was seconds from punishing a pack wolf but he couldn't seem to restrain himself.

The possibilities were all dreadful. Eve could have decided to run from him, catching a plane and hightailing it out of the state. She could have been kidnapped by the very people who had been leaving threats. A small, horrible part of him hoped for the latter as that meant she wasn't trying to leave him behind. He could always rescue her and be the knight in shining armor but convincing her to accept pack life, be a Luna, and be his mate honestly seemed a much more daunting task.

Eve's parents stood on their front porch as Lucas marched up the stairs and pushed his way inside. Blake was close behind him, having been the one to show up at the Alphas house to tell him the news. Blake greeted the Woods properly and assured them that he would take care of the situation.

"Here." Cathy had tears in her eyes as she handed a piece of paper to Blake. "This was on her wardrobe."

Blake read it quickly and cursed underneath his breath. "Lucas," He called out into the house. Before he could walk further, Eve's father spoke up.
