The day Mike had been preparing himself for was finally here. Football tryouts. School didn't start for another two weeks but the football team and cheer team had already begun their tryouts.
" Goodluck today" Ms.Chang smiled as she handed Mike his lunch bag
" Don't disappoint me. I've spent too much money on your football practices for you to not make the team." His father reminded him
Mike nodded as he got into the car waiting for his dad to drive him to Mckinnley. He wouldn't admit it but he was nervous. He was only going to be a freshman.
When he finally got to school he hesitated as he made his way to the field. He stood alone as others stood with their friends.
" Alright, guys. Your tryouts start now. Everything you do from this moment forward counts. We are the football team, not the cheerios" The coach laughed " We are men here so if you get injured get up and man up I don't want any tears. Got it?"
The team nodded "Got it"
Mike wanted to be the wide receiver, that was his position. He was a fast runner and had good catches. He however was threatened by Noah Puckerman, not only because the guy was twice his size but because he was definitely favored by the guy everyone knew would become Quarterback, Finn Hudson. Mike felt he was definitely being targeted, he was constantly tackled by Dave Karofsky, a guy even bigger than Noah. Mike found himself without the ball half the time. The other half he spent on the floor.
On their last play before the lunch break, he finally got the ball passed to him but just as he was about to make it to the other end zone both Dave Karofsky and Noah Puckerman tackled him to the ground causing his helmet to fly off and hit his head. The pain he felt was horrible but like the coach had told them. No tears. Right as he was about to get up another player ran up to him and helped him up.
" You alright?" He asked
" Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you"
"Matt Rutherford" The boy smiled
" Mike chang"
The two were the only ones who brought their own lunch as everyone else went out to buy food.
" How long have you been playing football?" Mike asked
" Since I was 2. My dad played so he wanted to teach me." " How long have you been playing ?" Matt asked
" Just about 3 years. My dad wants me to play. It's not really my thing" He confessed
At that moment he heard a familiar voice call his name " Mikey!"
He turned to see none other than Brittany followed by two other girls. A blonde and a brunette
" Hi, brit. You trying out for the cheer team?" Mike asked
"mhm," She smiled " You trying out for the football team?"
Mike gestured towards his bruised chin " Looks like it" he laughed
" Ouch" She frowned " Oh this is Santana Lopez," she said pointing to the brunette "And this is Quinn Fabray," she said pointing over to the blonde
Mike waved " This is Matt Rutherford"
Brittany waved. Mike noticed the weird stares Santana and Matt were giving each other.
" So Matt. What position are you playing" Santana asked sitting next to him
" Not sure yet. I want to be defense"
The girls sat with them until lunch was over and they had to go back to practice.
" Well we will see you around" Brittany smiled
" Oh wait, Matt. Could I get your number?" Santana smirked
Matt gladly gave her his number.
Brittany looked over at Quinn " Hey don't get any ideas Mike is my boyfriend. Not available"
Mike gave Brittany a confused look but before he could question her the girls walked off
" You are dating a cheerio? Bro your high school life is set if you make the team"Matt asked
Mike knew he was not dating Brittany but had to play along
" Yeah totally..."

Tryouts continued for another week until positions were announced
" Quarterback. Finn Hudson"
That was expected. Finn's face said it all he wasn't worried. Not as worried as MIke was.
" Center. Noah Puckerman"
This brought so much peace to Mike. He knew he was no longer competing with him.
"Wide receiver. Mike Chang"
Mike felt relief. He was so happy but couldn't show it. He just kept his straight face.
While the coach announced the rest of the positions all Mike could think about was how proud his father would finally be.
