anna
"anna morgan! wow!" i turned as skye spit my name out into the cold mountain air. i cocked my head to the side and brushed past kayla as i faced her.
"i'm sorry, who are you again? i don't think we've met." a playful smirk rested on her face and a light smiled danced on her lips.
"skye sailor." i nodded my head.
"oh, that's right. you're the one i beat in switzerland a few months ago. it's nice to put a name to the face." she scoffed and rolled her eyes.
"that was lucky. are you competing in fire and ice?"
"why? would that scare you? make you nervous?" her jaw fell slightly and she laughed nervously. "listen skye, it's all fun and games but when it comes down to it, i don't need luck to win any competition. i beat you on that hill fair and square because i'm simply better than you." she rolled her eyes again.
"how rude of you. i've gotten a lot better since then. you looked sloppy today. i doubt you'd beat me twice."
"at this point, the only reason i'd compete in fire and ice is to see the sad look on your face when i've beat you. the longer you sit here and insult me, the more inclined i feel to compete. don't mess with me skye, or you'll regret it. and as for this," i turned around and grabbed the autographed headshot from kayla's hand. i held it between my fingers and ripped it right down the center and let the pieces float to the snow-covered ground.
"it's pathetic." i turned on my heel and rejoined kayla, will and dink. each of them were staring at me with wide eyes. i rolled my eyes and grabbed my board, making my way to the short line to get lunch. i glanced over my shoulder and motioned for dink to join me.
"you owe me lunch. move it." he nodded his head quickly and was at my side in a short moment."i just never knew you could be so mean, anna." dink said, reliving me telling skye off.
"it was like, the coolest thing ever." kayla added, shoving a fry into her mouth. will had been silent throughout the whole ordeal after telling kayla that she needed to stop reading insults back and forth and beat skye at her own game.every now and then, i'd catch him staring at me but he never spoke. i'd brush it off and pretend i didn't notice, rejoining whatever conversation dink and kayla were having.
kayla was trying to explain to me how much better she was getting on her technique. i was nodding my head but i wasn't really paying attention. too many thoughts swam through my head as she spoke that it became easy to tune her out.
i was fighting a battle with myself. i was trying to decide on whether or not i wanted to compete in fire and ice. i didn't really see the point, i was much happier cheering for kayla on the sideline. but at the same time, i was yearning to get back out onto the mountain and feel the adrenaline that only a competition brought.
will would know what to tell you to do."anna? did you hear me? are you even listening?" kayla's voice pulled me from my thoughts.
"hmm?" she rolled her eyes.
"you need to come by the kennel. i've been making great progress!" i nodded my head, letting her know that i would.she had made a deal with will that, if he taught her to compete in fire and ice, she'd fix up the dog kennel. they had spent all day together and would be spending every day together for the foreseeable future. as kayla excitedly talked about things she was thrifting for the kennel, i was trying to figure out how to make myself scarce until the competition.
kayla and will had finished up for the day before dink and i had completed our final run. when we arrived at the base of the mountain, dink unstrapped both of his boots.
"that was so much fun. are you off tomorrow?" i shook my head.
"8 to 3, i think. been trying to avoid working with will, ya know? we could hit it as soon as i get off though." dink patted my shoulder and nodded his head.
"i gotcha. let's do that, i'll meet you here tomorrow. you heading in for the night?" i shook my head and pointed towards the half pipe.
"no, i'm going to head up there for a few runs. trying to make a decision." dink nodded and plopped down in the snow.
"i'll wait here for you. i want to watch anyways." i smiled down at him and gave him a small wave before i headed off towards the half pipe.
