"ASPEN HURRY THE hell up, we are going to be late!" Aspen can wholeheartedly assume that it was her mother who was, ever so sweetly, calling for her. She knew that they were going to be late, sort of. See, her ears knew, but for some odd reason, her brain did not get the message. So, there Aspen lay, on her bed, her muscles unmoving as she grumbled in response.Suddenly, as if the heavy gates of Heaven opened wide for Aspen Reeds herself, she felt a gust of wind blown against her bed and body.
"Oh, my God, Aspen! Get up! I can't believe this! Get. Up! Doamne ferește."
Nope. Just her mother.
"Aspen, I don't know how many times I've told you..."
It was around then that Aspen decided it was best to tune her out. She knew what her mother was going to say. It was almost the same every single time. Her rants consisted of a few curse words, some in English, some in Romanian. Maybe a "why would you do this," or a "you are unbelievable!" here and there. Rightfully so, right? Right.
"What are you doing standing in the middle of the room like that? Come on!" her mother waved her arms around the air as she spoke, throwing a duffel bag at Aspen, and rushing out of the room with two suitcases dragging behind her. "Mă bat singura."
Aspen sighed, reliving the moments that led to this very moment, and that would lead to the next two years of her life. Boarding school, how fun?
Here's what happened; Aspen had done many... questionable things, you could say, in her life before the final one that concluded in her shipment to her new school. Of course, she never got caught by anyone of authority. Except for her parents, that is. Instead of turning her in and sending her to juvie, they sent her to a boarding school. All that Aspen could do was wish that they had done the opposite and wonder what her life would have been like if they did, because, who would rather go to school?
Anyway, some of the many things she had done included skipping school to head over to the nearest Target with her friends and stuffing every pillow they could find with a single sardine then shoving them into the bathroom, taking a random person's horse and bringing it to school (the horse was eventually returned to its rightful owner), unleashing bees at the local pool and running away with all of the other visitors as if it was not her fault, which it wasn't entirely, and it was also a somewhat accident. She also accidentally logged into her principal's computer and posted his search history online. Sorry, former principal. The board didn't appreciate that one. How she didn't get caught? Nobody really knows. Let's just say that you could be here all day if you wanted to listen to all the things Aspen has done.
But the thing that sent her parents skyrocketing was when she was with her boyfriend, Blaine, and they went out for a stroll on a cool, summer night.
"We should start a fire," he said.
"It'll be fun," he said.
Can you see where this is going?
It wasn't fun.
Almost immediately after saying that, Aspen went on a whole adventure to look for sticks.
"Do you know how to start a fire? From sticks, I mean. Like, how do cartoon characters rub the sticks together and start a fire so quickly? I'm gonna need a tutorial because-"
"God, Aspen, obviously not. Do I look like I got a camping badge in scouts?"
Aspen made no reply to that.
"I brought a lighter, okay? Here, put the sticks on the ground- no, not like that! Just- give them to me! Holy shit..." Blaine sighed and shook his head.
She made no reply to any of that either. Her heart pounding a little harder in stress when he looked up at her with his eyebrows furrowed. What had she done wrong now?
"What, are you just gonna stand there and look pretty? Do something!"
"Oh. Sorry. What should I do?" She swayed side to side.
At this, Blaine rubbed his forehead with his thumb and pointer finger, as if Aspen were the bearer of bad news and he was the receiver. He sighed, then replied like a teacher scolding a student. "Do you need a play by play, Aspen? Do you want me to follow you around and- and tell you where to step? Or what to think? What do you want, Aspen? What do you want to do? What do you think you should do? I'll give you a hint; we're making a fire, and have a total of three sticks in the pile so far. Get it now?" He rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Good grief."
Aspen looked from left to right in disbelief. Was he being serious? Was he really taunting her when all she did was ask what she could do to help? No it's alright. She could help. So, she went and got more sticks.
Are you catching on now?
Aspen collected a few more sticks and brought them to her beloved boyfriend, leaving a spare one in her back pocket. "Here, babe."
"Thank you, honey."
Gag.
It took a few attempts before the fire lit, and only a few seconds later Blaine started eating through Aspen's skin again.
"How did it feel to do part of a man's job? Let's just say, I'm no good at your type of job, so, you'd have to do that too."
Let's guess... cook?
Let's just say Aspen didn't let Blaine finish his thought. Thankfully, she whacked him in the head with the stick and ran away as fast as she could. She remembers hearing a scream, and a few profanities including her name, but she never turned back. She also never saw him again, but the countless of missed calls and messages on her phone from Blaine felt nearly as bad as seeing him in real life.
Aspen couldn't tell her parents why she did what she did. She didn't know why, but she just couldn't. It wasn't like that was the only time Blaine ever did anything to annoy Aspen. In fact, he rarely ever annoyed her. It was his actions that she was afraid of sharing. His words were just the last few drops before the bottle overflowed.
You could ask Aspen the same question and you'd receive the same answer every time.
How does she feel about what she'd done?
Worth it.
