Everyone could tell that Neal and Peter had returned from their operation. It was the shift in the air, the way the energy changed, and people could just tell. Oh, and the fact that Peter was scolding Neal and literally everyone could hear.
"Neal, you were too reckless today," Peter was saying, walking slightly behind Neal, who was heading straight for his desk.
"I know, Peter." Neal faced away from Peter, resting his hands on the top of his desk, head bent.
"I'm being serious. You keep trying to bend the rules like that and you're going to end up back in prison."
"I know!"
"No, you don't get it!"
"I do!" Neal's right hand
"Yeah? Then why don't you act like it? Follow the rules, complete the mission. That's all I'm asking for! You stay alive and you stay out of prison. I don't see what's so difficult abo-"
"Bruce! Shut up!"
Everyone froze.
Neal stood up straight. He turned to face Peter, who couldn't help but notice the abnormal green tint to Neal's eyes. "Sorry," Neal whispered, running a hand through his hair. He took a deep breath, and then left the office.
After Neal was gone, the silence was back in full force. No one had moved from their position. After what felt like forever, Jones spoke up. "Who's... Bruce?"
"I don't know..." Peter replied, but he was going to find out.
