Sort of Like Romeo and Juliet

A cough ripped from Sasha's chest, making Lily--Lillian to her superiors--visibly cringe. The town was in total anarchy since both of the local churches started protesting against each other. One church would say that the end times was upon us, while the other said that it was only the beginning. There was more to the story as to why the churches were fighting, but it was nothing Lily wanted to put thought into.
Her father was the priest of the church that continued to push that it was the end, and Sasha--who Lily was now watching cough up her own lungs--was the opposite church's priest's daughter, and Lily's best friend. Like Romeo and Juliet without the romance.

Right now Sasha was on the ground outside her house that was connected to the church, her nose bleeding, her eyes glistening, her face pale. She was already sick, but it just progressively got worse. Her father, who was always at the church nowadays, and her mother, who was always at work as a local store manager, had little time to pay attention to Sasha, so, Lily became her caretaker.
When the battle between the churches ensued, Lily was banned from seeing Sasha, but she never listened. She wanted to be there for her friend.

Sasha looked like she was going to keel over and die, but her brave friend would most certainly not let that happen. They'd been through so much. When the battle began between the religions is when all hell broke loose in the town. Many fell ill, some just died as they lived. It was heart-shattering to see so much devastation in a place they'd grown up their whole lives. It hurt enough that the people they were friends with were only now bitter enemies and unfriendly memories.

The sky was painted orange from the flames that lingered over by the churches. It was a literal mid-evil riot. People with burning torches and fired up angers stood across from each other, preaching and screaming most unholy things, which just made this even more ironic. Lily would never forget the burning hatred in their eyes . . .

But there was no time to think about how depressing this situation was. Lily quickly picked up her slowly dying friend and carried her, jogging the best she could across the terrain. Her ankle was injured earlier as she went to rescue Sasha. She was attacked by one of the more-devoted church-goers that went against her own religion. They managed to get the upper-hand in their brawl and twisted Lily's ankle, causing her to squeal and the over-religious woman to smirk most wickedly. It was a haunting experience for Lily, but she pushed it to the back of her head and kept her main goal of saving her friend.

Her feet crunched on the dry grass below, her limp making the sound stronger on the left and weaker on the right. When the battle ensued, not only did the people fall ill, it seemed like the town itself was getting sick. The flowers wilted, the bushes were only mere sticks, the grass dried up and crumbled away, even the trees lost all their leaves. It was only mid-spring. This was practically impossible. But it happened, and no one in the town seemed to notice, too caught up in their own misguided sense of personal pride and ignorance.

The blood from Sasha's ever-leaking mouth and nose started to stain Lily's clothes a dark color as she continued to haul her friend towards safety. At this point Sasha was unconscious, barely alive to say the least, her sandy hair was now lined with red and her once-tanned face was pale as a ghost. Lily struggled to keep her hold on her as she kept stumbling away from the churches, her breathing a mess along with Sasha's. She could hardly feel any warmth in her friend, just a cold husk that was losing a battle between life and death. It almost made her break down and give up in tears. Almost . . .

She kept running, glancing back at the churches that began fading into the distance, but her weary consciousness started getting the best of her. She was always dizzy around blood, never having much of a good reaction when visibly seeing it, whether it was from her or someone else. And adding on the fact she was exhausted from taking care of Sasha twenty-four-seven. She felt like crumpling to the ground and napping for a good twenty years. Maybe when I wake up the world will be normal again. She thought humorlessly.

Her feet, moving as fast as they could, started hurting, her injured ankle making it harder. Her head was swimming, her friend was dying, everything was . . . madness. She fell forward, too caught up in her odd state of mind to notice the large semi tire that was in-front of her. She fell to the ground and on top of her friend, who was now only but a corpse who's soul had passed on no longer than a few minutes after they started running.

Now blood-soaked, Lily sat up, staring down at her once-breathing friend, practically feeling her spirit shattering into a million pieces. She was the only thing she had left to hold on to and the only thing left for her to rely on. She couldn't even rely on her own parents. She looked at herself, noticing her thrift-store bought shirt and pajama pants were stained dark, a crude reminder of her friend's passing. She scooted away from the lifeless body, her eyes wide with fear, hopelessness, and pure loss. She got to her feet and spun around, only to be greeted by a harsh smelling trench-coat and a stubble-faced man. She fell back to her butt, returning to her place in the dead grass, peering up at the man with messy brown hair and piercing blue eyes.

She mistook him for one of the rabid church-goers, making her scream slightly and scoot away, subsequently making her pull herself back into her friend's stone cold body. She didn't notice, nor did she bother to care, that she had just bumped into Sasha, because her main focus was on the man that lingered above her like God himself. His face wasn't angry or sad, though . . . just . . . blank. Was he there to hurt her? Help her? She shouldn't trust him . . .

At that moment she heard a simultaneous screaming over at the churches, but it didn't sound like normal screaming, it sounded choked and corrupted. Her eyes widened as she saw smoke-like things flying up into the air before descending into the Earth. She looked back at the trench-coated man to see he was standing directly in-front of her, crouching down to meet her level. She gulped and watched him, her pale blue eyes staring into his baby blues.

"Are you going to kill me?" She asked, her breath making the cool air between them turn into smoke.

"No . . ." The man's slightly rough voice trailed as he reached his hand out to her, "In-fact I'm doing the opposite."

His finger tips touched her forehead, his soft touch sending chills down her spine as she cringed, her face distorting for a moment before she relaxed. She felt . . . better. Oddly enough. She looked back at him and then at herself. Her clothes were still bloodstained and her mind still shattered from the death of her friend, but she was rejuvenated, physically at least. Her ankle was healed and her sleepiness had faded. Her mind automatically started piecing things together. "The way he stood over her like God himself". She looked back at his half-smooth half-stubble face, "Are you God?" She questioned, her tone hushed, her look incredulous.

It brought a smile to his face. A smile of all things. "No, that is very flattering, but no," He said, getting back to his feet, "I merely serve him. I'm an angel of the lord." Now that's what struck Lily. An angel? Flesh and blood servant of God himself?

She stared at him with wide eyes for a while before she stood up to match his height, only about two inches shorter than him, "Why did you save me?" She asked, and his smile faded and his face didn't return to it's blank state, it look perplexed.

He obviously didn't know why he saved her, but he still said, "Because we're to protect the humans from unnatural evil." And then he just . . . disappeared. The sound of wings fluttering filled her ears and he was gone in the blink of an eye.

(Did you guys enjoy the first chapter? I hope you did. I worked for about two days on it, putting as much brainpower as possible into it. You could leave me feedback, or not, I dun mind, it's all up to you, reader. Thank you for reading. Also, the girl on the side is Lily. I'm still learning how to use this website, so, don't kill me if I get things wrong.)
