"If you plan to get in my way, you're either extremely brave, or extremely foolish. Very few are ever the former, so prove me that you're braver than you look...or else I'll gut you like fish."

Born to Gol D. Roger, and Rouge, Roger D. Y/N, who took his last name after his father's first name, is the older brother of Portgas D. Ace and sworn brother to him, Monkey D. Luffy, and Sabo back when they all drank their cups of sake in the forest of Windmill City. From there, Y/N headed off on his journey first, way before any of the brothers have turned to the ripe age fit for their own journeys as well. He travels to different islands, learning their cultures, enjoying the food, and most of all, wreaking havoc for the marines.

Along the way, he meets with the infamous Red-Haired Shanks, who instantly recognizes the eyes that his former captain once had when he was a part of the crew Gol D. Roger captained. So, he takes him under his wing and teaches him all he knows alongside his fellow crewmates like Yasopp, Lucky Roux, and Benn Beckman. He also displays a natural proficiency with Armament and Observation Haki, the latter being his most proficient Haki, able to predict moves and dodge with ease from even Lucky Roux himself, but that's just a tall tale that only Shank's crew has witnessed first hand and is only possible when he activates his Haki.

However, when he soon awakens to the Haki of the Supreme King, his epithet of Mad Man becomes all too clear. To the weak-willed, they not only pass out due to the immense pressure of his Haki, but in their minds, the last thing they seem to hear before losing consciousness is the sound of a demon's growl, before it turns into laughter, as if madness manifests into Haki.

Before he departs on his solo journey, bidding farewell to the Red-Haired Pirates, Shanks personally gifts him with something, a katana but this one has a black blade on it. There are rare few swords that have such quality, mainly because the wielders imbue Armament Haki so much that it just stays black.

With the gift from Shanks, he continues his journey, ending up in Loguetown, the place where the start and end of Gol D. Roger's life has taken place before he can even utter the words "Dada". But as he walks through the town, he comes upon a familiar face, a scar under their left eye, and a toothy grin that the pirate king once held...his sworn brother, Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew.
