Nyra sat in a cold, stone chair in the corner of a large room. Her left arm was elevated and cuffed down on a table next to her. Her entire body was held to the chair with heavy chains, and cuffs around her neck and ankles.

She turned her head as much as she could, staring across the windowless room at a group of surgeons and medical assistants. They were preparing tools and medicines for amputation.

Five officers also stood in the room, standing as silent sentinels, one guarding the door and the rest standing in a semicircle around Nyra. Making any hope of escape next to impossible.

She wondered what had happened to everyone else. Surely they wouldn't be trying to rescue her. Her mind wandered back to the moment everything had happened; when they had been suddenly cornered, the moment she had realised they'd been betrayed.

No one in the room was looking directly at her. She tried struggling against the chains, but to no avail.

How long would the amputation take? She wondered if they would put her to sleep, or give her painkillers, or simply do it without giving her medicine as a punishment. How foolish she was to have gotten herself in this situation.

She closed her eyes. Maybe it was all just a dream. Maybe she would wake up any second now and find she was still just in her bed. But the chains were too heavy, the prospect, too real.

Maybe she would simply die as it happened. Relieving the pain early, not having to deal with the weight of being an undesirable and an outcast any longer.

Opening her eyes again, Nyra was suddenly hit by a bright flash of light. The surgeons were all crowded around her, and one of them was shining a bright light in her face.

Every surgeon carried a tool of some kind, most of them bloodstained and all looking sinister and frightening. She winced away as a tall man brought a needle down upon her, sticking it into her neck.

The lights dimmed and she felt her eyes grow heavy. Her last image was of masked surgeons bearing down upon her, sealing her fate. And then pain overtook her.
