Two Months Earlier...
Nyra Paige was probably one of the most unlucky people she knew.A fairly tall girl with red hair and chocolate brown eyes, she was already twenty-one and was still treated like she was the age of seven. And not only that, but she was also considered an undesirable in the cities, and was wanted by the government. But she thought that the first one was definitely more important. Her life as a native away from society was supposedly better than living under the government's reign, yes, but there wasn't much to actually do. Unless, of course, you liked walking or farming all day.She had left the community and her hometown Bernsley, at the young age of only five. Running away from her home, her parents, and getting adopted by a group of outlaws who called themselves natives. She had kept her surname "Paige", but had accepted the first name the natives gave her: Nyra.It had seemed exciting at first. At home, she hadn't been able to go to school or see other children. But as a native, there still was no school but there were so many people. And few rules. Never go wandering off alone, Never make fires outdoors, and Never leave the native tribe. They were easy enough to follow most of the time, though Nyra sometimes found herself wandering away soley, tired of working all day and wanting a little adventure. She sometimes got caught, of course, but she was hardly punished.Nyra often had to work extra hard, because most people in the tribe didn't have left arms. That was because when anyone new joined the tribe, they had to get rid of their cyborg left arm, for it was rumored anyone working for the regime could take control of the arms any time. They also had trackers. So other than the people lucky enough to be missing the genetic addition that made everyone with it born without a left arm, most people had to do their best with only one.Nyra had been of the few lucky people to be missing that "crucial" genetic addition, and had run away to avoid amputation. That had been all the proof she needed that the government was corrupt, even if she didn't live under its control. Now, she sat on a chair fashioned out of old canvas, sitting solemnly as her adopted mother, Hanola, wrapped cloth around a wound on her arm.Hanola was giving her the usual speech, saying things like "You really shouldn't have done that" and "Haven't sixteen years in the wild taught you anything?", but Nyra wasn't really listening. She was staring across the plains at the city in the far, far distance. It was Solaris, one of the richest cities and where she had nearly been amputated.3."What's the city like?" She asked suddenly, cutting Hanola off mid-sentence. "I've never really explored."Hanola looked at her. "It's not really much of a place to explore. The laws are so strict and there's honestly not much to do in any city. Everyone spends most of their time indoors." She looked back down at Nyra's wound. "At least from what I've heard"Nyra flexed her arm as Hanola finished with it. "I'd like to go someday. Maybe, you know, start over. Begin a new life, where I have a family and I'm not an outlaw."Hanola looked at her with a look a little too understanding. Nyra averted her gaze and instead turned back to the camp. People were moving boxes and tearing down tents. A scout party had been sighted in the woods about a day away from them, and the tribe needed to get a move on and leave as quickly as possible. Her best friend, Fern, was nearby, bending over a box of what looked like papers, but she looked up when Nyra called her name."Hey! You done?" Fern yelled back, shutting the box. "I've been waiting ages."The two girls set off towards Fern's family tent, talking and laughing as they went. Fern was several years younger than Nyra, but they were still great friends, sharing similar interests and both in agreement that life as a native was pretty boring. The sky darkened steadily as they tore down tents, moved crates, and finally climbing into the bed of a camouflaged truck with a load of supplies, as stars began to dot the landscape. The entire tribe moved as one, all in jeeps, trucks, and even an old moving truck, all painted with green, orange and brown to blend in with the scenery around them.Nyra watched the sky as they drove. It was a cloudless night, which only meant they had to stay in the thick woods. She peered through the gaps in the trees, waiting... and then-Thousands upon thousands of drones. All flying through the sky above their heads.
