Prologue
“And the winner is ticket number sixty-nine!” the man announced, looking up from the sheet of paper as his eyes roamed the crowd. A few disappointed groans were heard but the man hasn’t found the lucky winner and neither had I. I craned my neck, wondering who the unlucky winner was to win a trip to Little Leigh, a mundane seaside town in California.
“Leigh, that’s your ticket,” Bethany, my younger sister, pointed to the golden ticket I had used as a bookmark, “You won.”
“Excuse me?” I narrowed my eyes at her, flipping open to the page where the bookmark casually laid. The number sixty-nine was printed on it and I felt my heart skip a beat.
I was the winner.
“Looks like we found our winner,” the man smiled, beckoning me to come up on stage. I slowly stood up, feeling my knees get weaker with each second, and headed to the stage. I climbed up the stairs only to trip on my left foot and fall onto the cold, hard ground.
The man quickly ran up to me but I managed to stand up and regain my balance before I got the chance the further embarrass myself.
He passed me an envelope containing a boarding pass to California.
A prize which I didn’t know would change my life.
