"Lo, you can't tell me that you would rather spend your Friday night working than to spend it at a party."Normani, Lauren's roommate, practically groaned. She and Lauren had lived with each other since their first semester of college, and the two had been best friends ever since.
Lauren rolled her eyes in response, slipping her books into her purse.
"We're in our final semester of college, Mani."Lauren replied, her hand resting on her hip as she looked down at the other girl who was now pouting.
"Exactly! That's why you need to come!"She protested, a smirk on her face as she poked Lauren's arm."And I'm sure there will be some fierce ladies there tonight. Or some little innocent Freshman that is purely enchanted by those dreamy eyes."She teased.
Scoffing at the girl, Lauren rolled her eyes. Of course she wasn't really upset with Normani. But, ever since Lauren and her girlfriend of three years had broken up, Normani had been urging her to hookup with anyone and everyone.
"I'm going to work. It'll be dead anyways, so I can use the extra time to study."Lauren explained, slipping her black leather jacket onto her body."Call me if you get too drunk and can't find your way home."She teased, pulling the door shut behind her.
------------------------
After nearly five hours of ringing up customers and going through her course notes, Lauren was beginning to regret her decision of not going to the party. Her eyes shifted to her coworker Ally, sticking her tongue out at the the girl when they made eye contact.
"Still planning on moving after you graduate?"
"That's the plan."Lauren confirmed.
Ally was two years older than Lauren, but the two of them had grown up in the same neighborhood since their childhood. Ally was who Lauren vented to after she and Sarah had broken up. And, in typical Ally fashion, she had consoled Lauren and helped her through it.
After Lauren had explained her post graduation plans to Ally, she realized that they weren't the only two in the building.
"Do you know who that is?"Lauren whispered, motioning towards the figure that was sitting in the windowsill. Long brunette curls covered the girls' features as her eyes remained locked on the text in front of her.
Typically, Lauren worked day shifts. And, if she had to work nights, they let her go early if business was slow. Throughout her shifts, she couldn't recall ever seeing the girl.
"Her name is Camila."Ally explained, now standing beside Lauren."Every night, she comes in here until we close and she just reads.
"She doesn't buy anything?"Lauren asked curiously, looking over at Ally. Ally simply shook her head.
"Hey Mila."Ally called out and, for the first time, Lauren got a good look at the mystery girl.
Everything about this girl was breathtaking. Her eyes were brown, but not the usually boring color. They were warm, a certain light in them that Lauren had never seen before. Her features made it obvious that she was close to the same age as Lauren.
"Oh God, I'm so sorry Ally. I just got caught up in the book. I swear it won't happen again."Camila spoke quickly, her hands fumbling for the tattered bag that sat beside her as she sat the book down.
"Don't worry about it, we lost track of time too."Ally assured her, causing Camila's features to soften.
Lauren studied her face, the way it was so detailed and delicate. She didn't realize she was staring until she heard Ally clear her throat.
"Thank you, I really appreciate it. It's time for me to go, though. I'm sure you two have much better places to be."Camila said as she backed towards the door."Have a good night, Ally and.."She trailed off, waiting for Lauren to properly introduce herself.
"Lauren."Ally answered for her, causing a blush to come over Lauren's cheeks.
"I'm Lauren."
"Lauren."Camila repeated, a smile forming on her lips as she backed out of the door. Once she was gone, Ally's laughter filled the room.
"What?!"Lauren asked, looking down at the older girl.
"Somebody's got a crush."Ally sang, nudging Lauren with her shoulder.
"Grow up Ally."Lauren narrowed her eyes at the girl playfully before her view fell back to the now empty sill.
"Is it always To Kill a Mockingbird?"Lauren asked Ally as she picked up the book. When Ally nodded, Lauren placed her hand on the door."I'll be right back, okay? Go ahead and take the money out of my purse to pay for this."She instructed, heading out in search of Camila.
