Nathan;

"Good work boys, take 'em down to the station to be processed."

After seeing the last of the gang being cuffed up and sitting in a police car, I headed towards my car and drove to the station. New day same measly criminals.

Down at the station, I was greeted with a cup of coffee and praise. I was grateful for the commendation but these cases had now become monotonous. They all had the same routine, some poor chap thinking he had enough brains to start a mafia and ended up making some stupid mistake leading me right to his doorstep.

I wanted more, the heavier cases, something to challenge me.

Janet's voice brings me back to reality. "The boss wants to see you." For only her first year on the force, the kid's got some grit and a whole lot of sass.

I knock before entering the room. Inside I spot an all-bald man around the age of 60 sitting behind a mahogany desk, littered with case files. Chief Collins, the man who taught me everything I know, the man I owe my life.

"You wanted to see me, sir?"

"Detective Nathan, I hope you know that I haven't called you in here to congratulate you." I have to bite back a smile, for all his tough exterior, on the inside he couldn't be softer. And yet I don't smile because I know that this man is serious about what he does and if there is one thing he had taught me it's that you have to respect this line of work. The thought of the lives at stake because of our decisions sobers me up right away and any hint of amusement I found in that situation is gone.

"No, sir."

"So, I haven't messed you up too bad", he says with a twinkle in his eye. He picks up a file from the mess on his table and hands it to me. Expecting it to be like the same case files I've seen before, I open it rather slowly.

But what stares back at me grabs my attention.
