Home... The most wonderful place you can have. You've got family, friends, and food. Amber Hollins is sixteen, she has blonde hair, usually in a braid, blue eyes, and she's five foot six. Amber lives in a nice little town known as Kilton. It may not look like a very nice town, but it has very nice people. Down the street from her house is a small orphanage. Most of her friends are orphans... Actually, all her friends are orphans, but you'll never know the nicest friends in the whole world. Amber's friends names are; Tanner, Andi, Angela, and Tom.
Tanner is fourteen and a bit taller than Amber.
Andi is twelve and a bit shorter than Amber.
Angela is fourteen and is about one inch shorter than Amber.
And Tom is sixteen and very tall, taller than both Amber or Tanner.
Whenever she's bored or want to see her friends, She walks or bikes down the street. Usually having to sneak in the orphanage to see her friends, because if she gets caught by the mistress, she'll think Amber's one of the orphans. Your probably thinking, 'oh it can't be that bad if the mistress thinks she's one of the orphans.' Well, your wrong. When she catches her, she'll never let her go. Usually she has to call her mom and prove to the mistress that she has a parent. When that happens, Amber's mom gets upset, because she had to come pick her up and take her home. Amber's dad died in a plane crash when he was on his way to one of his job sites. Her mom doesn't usually like to talk about it.
Amber's not really suppose to go to the orphanage anymore, so says her mom, but she goes anyway. Amber enjoys her home. She's got a mom, friends, and food. You know what they say, 'home sweet home'. Well, Amber's home isn't about to become any sweeter, in fact it was going to be destroyed. That's right, there were sirens and people panicking. It was mid-fall and Amber's mom was calling her. (I say calling she was actually screaming bloody murder, for her. )She ran over to her mother quickly and her mother grabbed her shoulders tightly. 'I need you to get to safety, somewhere underground A.S.A.P, ok?' She said, her voice a little cracky.
'Mom, what's going to happen?' Amber asked.
'Bombs.. They're going to kill us. Now run! Go! Hurry!' She said as she looked up.
'Mom! Are you coming?' She asked worriedly.
'Just run!!'
She didn't bother looking up, she just ran as fast as possible, which was really, really fast. Amber found a manhole in the middle of the street. She jumped down in it and scurried down the pipes. All that time she was thinking about her mom and how she had said, 'They're going to kill us.'. Who's they?
She kept running, faster than ever before. After a few minutes a huge exploding went off, shaking the ground, it made her trip and fall to the ground as she hit her head so hard that she went unconscious.Amber did'nt know how long she was unconscious for, but she seemed to be alive, a bit bloody and dirty, but she was alive. She was a little bit dizzy and had a pounding headache, from the hard hit. She got up and steadied herself as she looked around, looking for a way out. The way she came had caved in. Light. There was a light in the distance. Amber started walking toward it, she was about to run, but had second thoughts because of her being dizzy and all. Once she got to the hole she looked up, squinting her eyes because of the brightness. She climbed up the partly broken ladder, using barely any of her weight so it wouldn't brake. She reached the top and peeked her head out, it was so bright, she shaded her eyes with her forearm and looked around. The sight was horrific, buldings now in ashes, dead body's here and there, smoke everywhere. Amber couldn't help but tear up, thinking of all the people that died. There weren't very many safe underground places in Kilton.
Amber hopped out and looked for someone, maybe she would know or recognize, or maybe just a person to help her, but again, she was knocked out for who knows how long. Not a sign, just a bunch of dead people. She picked up a few things here and there, that maybe she could use to survive. Amber originally carried a pocket knife everywhere. Amber took her sweater off and used it as a bag. She found a few secret components in the ground, underneath houses and buildings. The secret components wouldn't fit a person in them though. She found an emergency axe, that she could use for building fires. She also found some rope. I'll bet that'll be useful, Amber thought. After she found what she could, Amber looked around for a place to live. A noise stopped her, making her look back. It sounded like a baby crying, which worried her. She started running toward the sound and finally came to a secret component that Amber hadn't looked into yet. It was just a bit bigger than the others and it was buried in ashes and burnt lumber. She unburied it and opened up, to see a baby covered in dust. She gasped and picked it up gently.
'What am I suppose to do with a baby?' She asked, outloys. 'It looks like it's about a year old.'
The baby was crying, more like screaming. Amber's headache was bad enough, She couldn't stand this baby crying.
Amber looked far in the distance to see if I could find a place that hasn't exploded. A forest. There was a forest that she always use to play in with her friends. It was a long walk from town, but worth it. She swung her bag around her shoulder and carried the baby in the other arm.
'I can't believe you and I are the only ones alive.' She said to the baby, even though it couldn't understand her.
Amber kept walking, but another noise was about to stop her. She wasn't sure if she should turn around or not, but she ended up turning around and look up. the first thing and saw was a helicopter coming down. This headache is just going to get worse with all of this noise, I thought. Maybe it'll help us.
She started walking to where it was going to land. When it landed a man jumped out. He looked like he was in his thirties. Shaved face, short brown hair, and what looked like a captains uniform. His face had no emotion, he looked like nothing had happened, no explosion, nothing.
'What's going on?' Amber asked.
'I'm here to take you to safety.' The man answered.
'I don't even know your name or where your going to take me.'
'Like I said, I'm taking you to safety. My name is Captain John Philips--' He then realized the baby in my arms. Amber realized he was looking down at the baby. 'I found her in a seceret component in one of the houses.'
'Is she yours?' He asked, not being able to hear her.
Amber got angry. She hated when people wouldn't just shut up and listen. 'Do I really look that old?!' She yelled. 'I said I found her! I'm only fourteen.'
He looked at Amber and scowled. 'Sorry, I didn't hear you. Do you know her mom?'
'No, of course I don't!'
'I might know where she is. Yesterday, we came and found all of the survivors we could. I came back today to double check. It's a good thing I did too.'
'Who did you find?' Amber asked quickly. She really wanted to know if her friends had survived.
'Too many to name.' He answered. 'Would you like me to take you to them?'
Amber nodded. The thought of them being alive gave Amber hope. 'Of course!'
'Alright, come with me then.' He then started walking toward the helicopter. Amber followed close behind. When they arrived they were on top of a skyscraper in a city.
'Where are we?' Amber asked.
'Jackson city.' Captain John answered.
Amber didn't know exactly where Jackson city was, but she didn't bother asking. They walked into an elevator and started going down. The baby, still in her arms.
The doors eventually opened to a huge room full of sick and hurt people. It was like a hospital. It had windows that you can look out of to see the huge city. The room seemed to be about 10 floors up, it was pretty high. The whole building looked like about 60 floors high.
'You can go and see if you know anyone.' He said as he went back up in the elevator.
Amber started walking through the people, seeing if she recognize anyone.
'Katie! My baby! Katie!' A woman yelled from a corner, in the room. Amber looked over at her and smiled. She quickly ran over to her and handed her the baby.
The woman had tears running down her eyes as she hugged the baby. 'Thank you! Thank you so much!' She said as she hugged Amber.
'Your welcome. I'm glad to help.' She said.
The woman smiled and went back over to the corner she was in before. Amber then began walking through the people again. Her heart began to sink. She didn't recognize anyone. Right when she was about to give up, she heard someone yelling.
'Amber! Over here! Amber!'
Amber turned around and a big smile came over her face. She saw Tanner and Andi. They were jumping and waving their hands in the air, trying to get her attention. Amber smiled, tears running down her eyes as she ran over to them.
She hugged them both in relief. 'I'm so glad your ok.' She said, letting go of them. She stopped and thought for a moment. 'Where is Angela and Tom?'
Tanner put his head down. 'They didn't make the explosion.'
Amber felt a tear escaping her eyes. 'How did you guys survive?'
Tanner sighed. 'I only had enough time to hide with Andi, because he was right at my side. I'm not sure where the other two were. When I was younger I asked the mistress where my parents were. She said that they had died in a explosion and someone got me out of it before it happened. When I was nine I built and underground safety place in back of the orphanage so if another explosion happened, I would know where to go. I brought Andi with me and we down into safety.'
'I... I hid in one of the manholes in the street. My mom told me to find a place and that's where I decided I would go. My mom didn't come with me, she stayed where she was and died.' Amber said.
Andi put a hand on my shoulder. 'It's alright. At least we have us three.'
Tanner nodded and started to look around. 'It's going to be dark soon. We should find a place in this mess, where we could sleep.'
Amber looked around and spotted an empty corner. She pointed to it. 'Over there.'
'That's a good spot.' Tanner said.
They walked over and sat down, with their backs against the wall.
Tanner looked over at Amber. 'Your face looks terrible, would you like me to get you a wet cloth?'
'Yes please! Is there water here?'
'Yeah, I'll get you some of that too.' He said, getting up.
A few minutes later, he came back with a wet cloth and a glass of water. Amber took them from him and gulped down the glass of water. She started wiping down her face and sighed. 'This is terrible. I can't believe they would do that.' There it is again I said they. Who is they? Amber thought.
'I know. I guess it just this cruel world we live in.' Tanner said.
'We should get some sleep you guys.' Andi said, laying down and slowly falling asleep.
Amber put the cloth down, laid down, and started to fall asleep. Tanner soon fell asleep as well.In the middle of the night, a slight knocking woke Amber up. It doesn't take much to wake her up. She sat up and looked to see where the knocking was coming from. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw something flash by one of the windows. Amber scanned all the windows and one caught her eye. She saw something black with glowing green eyes. The figure wasn't really noticeable, it was too dark.
