A house. A small house. An old, creaking house, but a house. It had a small fence right next to it and a small barn behind it, with a well right outside of the barn. This was like a mansion to them.
'Is there anyone living in it?' Amber asked Andi.
'I don't know, this is the farthest I've gotten to it.'
'Let's go find out.' Tanner suggested, waking toward it.
Amber and Andi followed.
Tanner knocked on the door. No answer. Again, they knocked. Still no answer. They weren't gonna just stay outside, so they walked in. Dusty cabinets, furniture, ect. Everything was dusty, abandoned. Amberc was pretty sure no one lived there.
'Hello? Anyone home?' Tanner called. No answer, again.
'Let's take a look around.' Amber suggested.
They looked around the house. There were four bedrooms in the second story, a living room with a wood stove on the main floor, two bathrooms, one on the second floor and one ok the main floor, a kitchen and dining room combined, also on the main floor, and a library in the basement, there were a bunch of books in the library. Awesome. I love to read.
'I call this bedroom!' Andi yelled.
Amber rolled my eyes. 'Picking rooms already? I'll pick when you guys are done.'
Tanner and Andi went back and forth between the rooms before finally picking them. Then it was Ambers turn. She picked a small room, She didn't want it too big. It had a desk, dresser, and a twin size bed. Who would leave a nice house just laying around? Now it's time to check out the barn.
'Hey, Tanner?' Amber asked, peeking into his bedroom.
'What?'
'Remember the barn we saw?'
'Yeah.'
'Let's go see what's inside.'
He didn't respond and instantly hit the floor running toward the door, Andi close behind.
They went to the barn and slid open the door. A John Deere tractor, sitting there uselessly.
'Whoa! We have our own tractor!' Andi yelled.
'Wow. For once, I feel rich.' Tanner said with a smile.
Amber laughed. 'Well, yeah. Look at all of this.'
'Blah! That's gross. Tanner, Amber, come take a look at this.' Andi said.
In one of the stalls in the barn, was a half rotten person. Half skeleton. Must be the owner.
'Should we burry it?' Tanner asked.
'Yeah. Don't want something dead laying around. It'll give me nightmares.' Amber said.
Tanner rolled his eyes.
They went and buried it. Simple as that. After that they went back inside and started to clean the house up. They got the well pumping, so they had running water and working toilets. It was nice and clean in no time. Looked as if it were brand new... well, on the inside. The outside was still old and ugly.
That night, they got the wood stove going and sat around in the living room. Again it was mid-fall so it was getting chilly.
'Wow...' Tanner sighed, 'this, this feels awesome. To have our own house, instead of living in an orphanage and having the mistress yelling at you all the time.'
'Tie your shoes right now, Tanner!' Amber said, mimicking in the Mistresses voice.
They all bursted out laughing.
'Yeah... It feels real nice.' Tanner said.
They sat in a few moments of silence before Amber finally broke it.
'Alright... I'm getting tired. I think it's time for me to hit the hay.'
Tanner nodded. 'Agreed.'
Andi nodded as well.
Amber stood up and walked strait to her room.
'Goodnight boys.' She said, before walking into her room.
'Goodnight Amber.' Both Andi and Tanner said.
It fees nice to be in a bed again, Amber thought. The blankets keeping you warm.
With a sigh, she finally fell asleep. That morning, Amber woke up feeling rested. Tanner was already down stairs, loading the stove.
She walked up behind him 'Since when did you know how to load a wood stove?' She asked him with a slight laugh.
He turned to face her and chuckled. 'I figure things out quickly.'
'I see...' Amber sat down on the couch. 'I was thinking that maybe I should run in to town today, earn a little money, and get some stuff to cook for supper.'
Tanner nodded. 'That works. Andi and I will get that tractor going and maybe take a few rounds.'.
'Good. Is he still sleeping?'
'Oh yeah, that little lump never wakes up early.'
Amber smiled. Those two are like brothers, they sort of are, in a way.
'Alright, well, I better be off. I'm getting hungry, and Andi will be when he wakes up.' Amber said as she got up. She slipped on her sweater and walk out the door.
With a sigh, she started walking toward town.
Amber walked a few blocks, looking for someone who needed help, asking people as she walked by. None so far. She kept walking and walking and finally she spotted a sign, on a toy store shop, that says 'help wanted'.
My moment of triumph, Amber thought. A place to earn money. Just what she needed. She walked in and went strait to the cash register. An old man, about 60 years of age, grey hair, with an unshaven beard, looked up at Amber.
'I saw that you needed help, and I need a job, so I'm willing to work.' she said.
The man smiled brightly. 'Thank you. I've needed help for a long amount of time now and you are the lifesaver to my shop. I will be needing you to fix up toys. Most of them are falling apart and I need you to fix them up.'
'I'll be glad to do it.' She said. Amber's not as good with putting things together as Tanner is, but she could manage.
'I'll have you start working right away. It's $10 an hour. You will be working in the room over there,' He said, pointing to a door in the corner of the shop, 'That is where you'll be staying all day. Our shop hours are from 7:00am to 5:00pm. Got that?' He asked.
She nodded, simply.
'Good. Now, go on.' He said.
Wow! $10 an hour! That's a lot! Amber walked right into the room and found herself in a workshop. Lots of broken toys. Oh boy. Lots and lots of work to do. She got started right away by fixing a broken 'jack in the box'.
