You arrived at Ted's apartment promptly after receiving his text. You had known Ted for the better half of your life, and were always there for him in the past. When he had first taken George from the jungle, when he broke up with Professor Wiseman, when he got a new job at the museum, and even on his wedding day, you were there for him as his 'Best Woman'.

But even knowing he was married, you couldn't help your undeniable feelings towards him. You'd loved Ted for a long time, and though he'd never reciprocate it, you were fine just to see him happy in life.

So when you had received a text of him saying, 'its over. me and gertrude finalized our divorce.', you had to say that you were extremely surprised.

Firstly, you had no idea that they were even getting a divorce. Ted had talked to you about a few rough spots in his marriage, but the issues never seemed big enough for an actual split.

Secondly, if Ted didn't ask you to come over to talk, then that USUALLY meant that the problem was way bigger than he let on. I mean, you knew it was already bad enough to go through a divorce with someone you loved, but you knew he'd be fine having you come over for that. There had to have been something more to it.

As you arrived at his doorstep, you vowed to figure out what that something was.

You raised your hand to gently knock on his door. "Ted," you called softly. "It's (y/n)" Hearing the clatter that came from inside the apartment, you knew that he had been hoping to see you.

The door swung open, and Ted stood there, hair disheveled and eyes bloodshot. He looked like he hadn't slept in days.

"(y/n)!" he exclaimed, his tired expression letting a smile grace his features at the sight of you. You smiled back, and he took you by the arm and dragged you inside, closing the door behind you.

He went into the kitchen to go do something (probably fix you a drink and snack, as per usual), and you situated yourself onto the couch.

As you drank in your surroundings, you realized the silence that had overtaken the apartment, which was strange.

While you mulled over this, Ted had finished pouring you some water and brought some Goldfish on a plate.

Finally, it hit you.

"Where's George?" you asked, innocently.

Ted immediately broke down into tears, sobbing. You stood up and wrapped your arms around his waist in an attempt to comfort him as he continued crying.

"Gertrude.. Gertrude took full custody of him..." he hiccuped, and you were in shock at his words. How could she be so cruel as to never let a man see his monkey again?

"Why would she do that?" you asked, and he shook his head.

"Because, shes a control freak. If she can't control everyone in her life to do exactly what she wants them to, she loses it," he spat.

You listened to him rant on, rubbing comforting circles on his lower back. He told you how hard he had tried to fight for George, but ultimately lost.

Once he was done with speaking, you turned to face him. He looked you in the eyes, and your face turned red as you gathered up all of your courage.

You pecked him on the cheek quickly, pulling away fast so that you didn't make him feel uncomfortable.

"I-I'll always be here for you, Ted..." you trailed off, blushing. His mouth was agape, and he reached to touch where you had left a kiss on his cheek, lost in his thoughts.

After a long moment of silence, he smiled sweetly. "I know," he said, and leaned in to return the favor.
