Things might not be exactly the same–not yet–but at least you had Rio back, but there was one more person you needed to fix your relationship with, although you didn't expect him to be here. Now. You glared at the back of his head, albeit a little more playfully, but frowned nonetheless.
"I thought you two were friends now?" Rio whispered, raising an eyebrow. You turned your glare onto the "right, I'll shut up." A grin broke your furrowed brows and knife-sharp eyes, and you turned back to watch Akabane.
"L/n!" He yelled, turning his head, "come join us!" It might have seemed like you were friends, but by the way, he was watching you, who would think otherwise? But you could see the daring glint in his eyes, he was planning something and you were not about to fall for it–semi-friendship or not.
You, Rio, Shiota, Okuda, and Rio's crush–the delinquent–sat around a marble table, while Akabane, some blue-headed kid named Sugino, two others called Isogai and Maehara, and two girls called Kanzaki and Kurahashi were climbing a "rock wall".
Akabane–you rolled your eyes–of course, made it into a game and bet he would win. You waved your hand, "not in a million years, but thank you!" You shouted from him, all the way up the wall. The rest of the lot was scattered upon the wall.
"Come on Y/n," Rio leaned in, seeming genuine, "why not try it? You'll wear a harness, and it looks like fun."
You went back to glaring at her, then you smiled and an irk mark appeared on the brim of your head, "if it's so fun, then why don't you try it?"
You waved her hand, "I just got my nails painted, I don't want them to get messed up climbing walls."
This girl–"feigning ignorance hmmm?" She smirked and threw her head toward yours, you threw your head to meet hers and dared, "if you do it, I'll do it." She glanced away for a second, a smirk drifting a little, then it hardened and she looked back toward you, "fine."
A few minutes later you were standing below the tall artificial wall, strapped into a harness, watching Rio with a grin, "scared?"
She scoffed, "you wish." Then she glanced away, and then back at you, "first one to the top spills a secret?"
You rolled your eyes, "I don't have one, and neither do you."
She tsked and shook her finger, pacing, "never say never."
You gasped, "Rio, do you have a secret I don't know about?"
She grinned, "maybe, but you won't find out if you don't beat me to the top."
"But I don't have a secret." You frowned because you didn't At least you didn't think you had a secret. But–well there was that, the times you spent with Akabane without Rio knowing, maybe that was a secret. Since Akabane hadn't said anything, you would assume–technically–it was considered a secret. Right?
You tilted your head up, "do you have a secret now?"
You rolled your eyes, "you'll only find out if you beat me," repeating her words was a game tactic, but this was Rio, so it might not work as well on her as it would someone else. Definitely not on Akabane, but he wasn't just 'someone else.'
"Fine." Then you turned and began climbing. You were so focused on the rocks and getting to the top first, that you hadn't noticed when you reached the others. You thought it was a little weird that they weren't yelling at Rio to catch up. Though, they all did stop there struggling to watch you climb. You barely glanced at them, focused on your bet with Rio.
A sinking feeling that she was already at the top jolted you and you looked up, nope. She wasn't there, the only person that seemed to actually be able to get to the top was Akabane. It wasn't surprising though, you beelined it for him, and soon he was pulling you up to the edge of the rock wall, where he sat. He stared at you with an amused expression as you caught your breath.
You started coughing which made him laugh. He smacked your back, and your coughing turned into laughter. "I...won..." you wheezed. "How's... that..." You looked up, finding Akabane giving you a lopsided smile. He looked like magic in that moment. His eyes were like pools of lava and the way he leaned back, was so calm and confident. He looked at the definition of reckless. He looked like a runaway prince, the sweat on his brow made it all the more believable.
But Akabane was no prince, he was evil incarnate. He only looked pretty. "You okay now?"
You swatted away the arm that was trying to snake around your waist as if you needed something to steady yourself. "Fine, but where's Rio?"
Akabane broke into a dark laugh, "take a look," he nodded, leaning back on his hands. You looked down, making sure to grip the wall to keep from falling. Rio was nowhere in sight.
"I don't understand." You frowned, facing Akabane again.
His wolfy grin told you he knew something you didn't. You leaned toward his face, narrowing your eyes, "where is she?" He leaned forward as well as if daring you to continue. You were going to head butt him, but before you could, you felt the synthetic wall crumble beneath you.
You had the right mind to scream and grip anything and everything. Akabane laughed and pulled you back up the wall by your wrists. You glared at him, you swear the only thing keeping you from pushing him off of this wall was the damned lawsuit you were sure to face, and potentially the court order. You did not feel like going to jail at this young age.
"Gods, I hate you," you grumbled and turned away, looking for Rio some more."
Akabane tsked and grabbed your arm with one hand, wrapping it around his waist. Then he cupped your cheek with his other hand and leaned him, hairs breath away, "I think you like me."
The surety of himself, the sheer arrogance made you shake with annoyance. You wanted to open your mouth and remind him why he was not flying off of this wall, but a better idea came to your head. You knew this game he was playing. He was trying to get you riled up, but you would not succumb to his idiocy. You closed your eyes, leaning into his touch as well as his face, your lips barely grazing his. He might not have been able to see it, but you smirked anyway and whispered, "dangerous words, Akabane."
Your heart beat incredibly fast, and you just knew Akabane could feel it because you could feel how fast his heart beat. You were so damn close to each other, if you pushed him off of the rock wall now, you would surely be taken with him. He leaned into your neck and whispered just above your ear, "better keep me in line then, L/n."
You shivered and he laughed. You've never wanted to punch someone so bad in your life. The moment was interrupted when you heard Rio call from below, from where you were sitting prior to this. "I guess you win!"
As soon as you saw her you began untangling your limbs from Akabane, feeling for the second time in the same five minutes, that there were in fact two people you wanted to punch at this very second.
