After Darren Heeler got back his English paper, he was beyond devastated. He only managed to get a 70% for his paper, which was considered average for him. He felt angry and stupid for getting such a mark. He absolutely prepared for the test weeks prior, by reading books and practising his writing, but somehow he got a low mark.
He didn't understand why he would get so low. He did feel under the weather that day of the test, and he had PE period before the test, which made him feel even more tired. Most of the time, he would get high 90% or even 100% for tests, so he didn't want to show his parents his test. He thought that they would be disgusted that he did worse than expected.
As he was walking home from school, he was just looking at the grade on the test, overthinking of what he could have done to prevent a failure like this. Occasionally, he would cover the mark with his thumbs whenever a stranger walked past. He didn't want anyone to see his marks, and he started to walk even faster, hoping to reach back home soon, where no one could possibly see his horrible grade, apart from his family.
He definitely couldn't let Bluey and Bingo see his test either. They see him as a genius, and he didn't want them to be disappointed by the truth. He folded the test, and insert it into his pockets.
When he entered the house, he realised that there was not much noise, other than the vacuum clean being on. Bluey and Bingo haven't gotten back from their school yet, so Darren sighed in relief, knowing that hiding the test paper would be a lot easier.
He walked up the stairs, as the noise of the vacuum became louder. He saw his mom vacuuming the hallway, and she notices her son and smiles.
"Oh, sweetie. You're back so soon. Do you want anything for lunch?" Chili offed the vacuum and asked, as Darren's hook his head, not wanting to burden his mother even further.
He thought about what Chili would think if she sees his result. He thought she would be unhappy that she wasted all of these years taking care of him, only for him to be revealed as a failure.
The thoughts made him shiver, before he realised that he has to answer or his Mom might get worried about him.
"Oh, no thanks, mom. I already ate lunch at school..." Darren lied. He felt bad lying to his mom, but he does it often to not make her worry about what happens in his life. Whatever happens in his life was his problem, and he promised himself that he wouldn't burden anyone with his problems.
"Uh, so, where's dad?" Darren asked, wanting to change the subject so that he wouldn't question him about his lunch any further.
Chili frowned for a millisecond, before returning to a smile. "Oh, your dad is mowing the lawn right now. You know about his love-hate relationship with lawnmowers, don't you?" Chili joked, letting out a little laugh.
Darren chuckled, as his tail wagged a lot. He remember his dad practically begging the lawnmower to start as if it was a real person. It was hilarious for Darren to remember about that.
"Yeah, mom. I know." Darren giggled with genuine happiness.
"Now if you excuse me, I have to go study now." Darren said whimsical, as my mom just giggled.
"Alright, but not too hard." Chili said, as she continues to vacuum the floor and Darren quickly entered his room and closes the door.
Chili knew that Darren was a boy who liked to hide things from her. She wouldn't force him to tell her what's up, but she always told him that he could share anything with her without any judgement. She looked at Darren's room with concern before sighing, and getting back to cleaning the house.
Darren took the test paper out of his pocket, and hid it in one of his drawers which was full of stationaries. He sat down by his desk, and start to wallow in self-pity. He felt guilty about hiding from everyone, even though he knows that she shouldn't. To distract himself, he took out his Mathematics textbook and started to solve some problems in them.
