Lisa sat in the passenger seat as Jennie drove to the soft opening of JKLM's fourth restaurant. With a grin, she turned to look in the backseat where her mom was blindfolded. She hoped anyone who pulled up next to them didn't think they were kidnapping someone. Once she and Chu had agreed on a name for the restaurant, Lisa had kept it a secret from her mom, a task that had proven to be rather difficult over the past couple of months. Lisa had stopped herself several times when updating her mom on the progress of the renovations. But the day was finally here, and she couldn't wait for the big reveal in just a few minutes. Her mom sighed as they turned a corner and she bumped into the door. "This feels completely unnecessary."
Lisa reached back and squeezed her mom's knee. "I told you, I have a surprise for you. Now hush. We're almost there."
"I know how to keep my eyes closed."
"I'm sure you do, but I know you, and you would never keep them closed like I asked."
"Fair point."
Jennie chuckled and shook her head. "You'll love it, Elena."
"She knows?"
"Of course she does. I had to share it with someone. Plus, it'd be hard to blindfold the driver. Safety hazard and all that."
"You could have shared it with your own mother," she grumbled.
"Nah. That's no fun. You can take it off in a few minutes, so find some patience back there."
Her mom mumbled something under her breath, but Lisa couldn't make out what it was. She looked over at Jen and gave her an exaggerated eye roll to which Jennie replied with a quiet laugh.
As Jen parked in front of the restaurant, Lisa took a deep breath and looked at the scene just beyond her window. Seulgi, Chu, Hae-In, and a handful of friends waited outside the restaurant with wide smiles. "Ready,
Mom?""Please get me out of this car."
"Okay, okay." Lisa squeezed Jen's hand and got out. She opened her mom's door and reached in to grab her hand, helping her out of the car and making sure she didn't trip over the curb. She positioned her mom and stood to the side. "On the count of three, you can take off the blindfold. One, two, three."
With that, her mom took it off and stared up at the big white letters against the brick building that said Conor's. She brought her hands to her mouth and gasped. "You named it after him?"
Lisa put her arm around her mom's shoulders. "We did. Do you like it?"
Her mom brought her in for a hug and whispered in her ear, "Thank you."
"I love you, Mom."
"I love you too. He'd be so proud of you."
Lisa nodded against her mom's shoulders, trying to hold back her tears. When her mom let go, she turned to Jennie and wrapped her in a tight hug. Lisa watched as her mom whispered in Jennie's ear before pulling back with a grin.
"Elena," Jennie exclaimed, swatting her arm before putting her hands behind her back.
Her mom walked off with a wink and went after Jisoo next. "What'd she say?" Lisa asked, narrowing her eyes at the slight blush on Jennie's cheeks.
"First, she thanked me for making you so happy," Jennie replied.
"Uh-huh. What else?"
Jennie pulled a hand from behind her back and dangled the blindfold in front of Lisa. "Then she handed me this and told me to make good use of it."
"Oh my god," Lisa groaned as she buried her face against Jennie's shoulder. "Maybe we should have taped her mouth shut too."
Jennie chuckled and held Lisa away from her, pushing a lock of hair behind her ear. "I heard your mom. She's right—your dad would be so proud of you. And I am too, Baby. I know none of this has been easy, but you never shied away from any of it. I consider myself lucky to have been by your side through it all. I love you so much."
"I love you more," Lisa replied, leaning forward for a gentle kiss.
"Now, I believe someone promised me I'd get some food today."
"So bossy," Lisa said as she plucked the blindfold from Jennie's hand and put it in her back pocket.
"What are you going to do with that?"
Lisa grinned and whispered in her ear, "Stick around and maybe you'll find out tonight."
