It was four days later that Layla got her next opportunity.
Keaira texted at 7 saying that she was going to meet up with her boyfriend and that it was going to just be Devon there. She said that Devon had said something about Layla looking really pretty the night before.
This time it was just her and she didn't need the cover of a huge party as an excuse. One of her mom's close friends came over. That was even better, they would be locked away in her room or down in the kitchen oblivious.
Layla told her mom she was going to sleep down in the basement again but she wasn't listening. She had her sleeping bag and inside was my change of clothes.
Her phone vibrated at eight and she pulled it out. "about to head out. I can just meet you at the park."
Layla sent back a quick reply. "Did they say anything about taking us to that place?"
Layla went out the basement door to the garage. It was small and cluttered and barely could fit a small car. The door was not automatic. You had to hold it up the whole time and it was really heavy. She had to squat and lift it up, high enough that she could slide under. Letting the door shut down so that it would make a huge bang.
When she was out of sight of the house she checked her phone and read Keairas reply. "yea we are meeting at the back corner as opposed to you."
When she got there her stomach was in a twist. There were four of them there not three. Keaira and her boyfriend were looking at something on her phone. The lights illuminated their faces. Devon sat perched on top of a fence with a man leaning on the fence talking to him. The man had to be at least mid-twenties Layla guess.
Layla walked up to Keaira who was a small ways away from the other two. She was totally engrossed in her phone. She was watching some videos with a lot of bright lights and sound effects. Layla could tell her boyfriend wasn't that interested in the video. He took most opportunities to talk with Layla. Keairas eyes were fixed on the screen while pink light from her phone danced on her face and in her eyes.
Layla played on her phone. She saw Deven look at her once or twice but not nearly as much as she stole a glance at him. This was the only time she had to see him. To take a quick glance. Like a sip out of a drink. She wanted to see his body language, his clothing, and facial expressions. She didn't learn a lot but she was happy anyways. After what felt like forever she checked the time, It was a little past nine.
Soon they moved around to meet up with the other two boys and talked for a few hours. A call came for DeMonta around eleven. He had the volume turned up high enough Layla could hear what was being said.
"I'm going to meet you down on Carson here in a sec, is JuneBug there?"
"Yeah, he's here. We're at the park, I'll head that way now." He turned, walking over to Devon and the other guy.
Soon we were all walking to the far exit of the park and onto the street. The group walked for a block until Layla could no longer see the park. They came to a stop where DeMonta told Keaira that they needed to wait. DeMonta and Junebug were going to come and pick them up in his car.
Around the corner, DeMonta waited for JuneBug to unlock his car. Which was parked on the side of the street and they drove to the meeting place. DeMonta helped load the random assortment of luggage into JuneBugs trunk. After they got done, they drove back to pick up the girls and Devon who were still waiting.
Layla ended up in the middle of the backseat. She kept her legs pressed closed trying not to take up more room than necessary for Devon. As they drove Layla tried not to lean up against him when the car would make a sharp turn. Devon tried to tell her it really wasn't a problem.
