Elvis is an astounding and celebrated figure in the music world but, no, he did not write a SINGLE one of his songs.
Regardless, Elvis wasn’t really known for being a songwriter, but he always managed to make the songs his own. He would put a new twist on songs with slower tempos and did such a great job of it that people assumed he was the original artist.
For example, the famous hit, “Hound Dog,” was originally performed by Big Mama Thornton as a blues song. The song was listed as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.” Yet, if you were to ask someone who sings the song “Hound Dog,” they will probably reply with “Elvis, duh.”
