One of the scars above Kaia's eye stretches when she shuts them with an exasperated sigh. She looks at the girl before her and shakes her head. Indigo had a feeling her plan was working. When Kaia looked around, and then back at Indi, she decided to give in. "Okay okay. When is this happening?" Indigo's grin split her face, and she threw her arms around the former soldier. Kaia smiled and patted her arm affectionately, before heading back the way she had come just a few minutes earlier.
"Where are you going?" Kaia didn't respond for a moment.
"I'm going to see what I can do for you. I may be able to help you and that friend you have."
Her eyes light up at that, and she joyfully follows the other woman across the splintered ramp. Indigo's shoes hit the gravel, scraping against the loose pebbles. She knows that Miles is looking at her, and before she heads out of sight, she waves to the sandy-haired boy. He waves back, a small tugging at the corners of his mouth.
The young girl proudly struts along with the militant woman, keeping pace. She side-eyes her, and then decides to keep going. When they reach a house at the very end of the gravel trail, Kaia pauses for a moment.
"We have to be respectful now, Indi. He's still unhappy with you for last week." Indigo nods and swipes a few strands of hair out of her eyes, pushing them behind her ear. The port keeper wasn't known for forgiveness, but he was very understanding. Kaia nudges her forwards, and Indigo knocks three times. "Miss Keen you may come in," A stentorian voice calls out. Kaia steps forwards, opening the door softly. "Mr Warner, I'm here on behalf of a friend of mine." Indigo cringes at that, and takes several steps, backing away from the one-story building.
She pauses when she gets to the end of the house, listening intently for any signs of yelling. Usually it would be Kaia yelling, but on the rare occasion, Mr. Warner could strike his own match. The only thing Indigo could hear consisted of the gulls calling to one another, and the men shouting at each other to move faster or that they were in the way. High noon was the only time Mr. Warner seemingly had any patience for visitors, and she and Kaia made it there on the dot today. A moment later, Kaia seemed to meander outside before spotting her and dragging her back to the door. Mr. Warner stuck his head around the corner of his office space before pulling back. Indigo looked around the small room for a moment, and decided it wasn't what she thought it was like. The floor was made up of rustic Cyprus that seemed to creak in every corner, and the walls were splashed with an ugly yellow paint. It hurt Indigo's eyes, and so she turned her attention elsewhere. At the reception desk sat an elderly woman. Her gray hair was pinned back, and on her nose sat a pair of reading glasses. She pursed her lips into a thin line, setting down whatever she was doing when she caught sight of Kaia, who had one hand on the young girl's shoulder. "Officer Keen," she started disapprovingly, "to what do I and my husband owe the pleasure?"
Kaia cleared her throat and took her hand away from Indigo. She suddenly felt small in the presence of the other women, who both seemed to command authority like it was a walk in the park. "I'm here to get Indigo Parker a ride for her and her friend. She's been requesting one for almost a month." Kaia stated, and then fell silent.
