Chapter 2

---•---

Cassandra

You're late I commented as I opened the door. Gosh why did that guy have to be so cute? Play it cool I told myself as he looked at my house. "Your house is almost as awesome as you." I racked my brain for a reply. "Let's just get started then on our calculus lesson." I forced a straight face. He just smiled that iconic smile, which was for me because I realized I was self consciously smiling too. "You have any food here?" "Let's just start the lesson please." I sighed, this was gonna be a long night. "Okay so we are gonna be in the living room. And I'm warning you now, my mom will watch you like a hawk. All the while in anticipation to look all of your information up." He just smiled at that "Who's to say that I haven't done the same. I have to know if any of my friends are secret spies for the government." I found myself blushing at this but quickly stopped. "We are not learning how to flirt here Alex we are here to work and improve the tiny size of your brain." He actually smiled at that too, wow that guy smiled at everything. "Who's to say I'm flirting? Oh and did you just call me Alex?" Stupid! He wasn't flirting with you! What's wrong with that brain of yours? And why in the heck did I call him Alex? "Alexander, sorry. Anyway you can put your stuff on the couch over here." Okay so what does a nerd, who in her spare time, tests out weaponry and build robots while hacking into government files, do in her spare time? Apparently she teaches calculus to hot guys. Calculus came naturally, numbers just fit together like puzzle pieces in my head. But what was off about this, was the fact that Alexander seemed like a smart guy. And my mom already had hacked into his school profile to find that the guy had freaking straight A's except for...well, calculus. "Um earth to Cassandra you there?" "Oh..I'm yea I am sorry Alexander, just thinking is all" "Sure let me guess..." He smiled as he said this. " You were wondering why I only do bad on calculus?" Omigosh did that crazy guy read minds for a living? "Maybe..." I said while trying not to laugh. Gosh stop flirting with him cass. "I just freaking hate calculus." "Well what's not to hate about Ms. Reynolds? "Gosh apparently nothing" "Oh my, then we are gonna have a lot of work to do." He just smiled at that. I repeat my last statement this is going to be a very long night. As we worked with one another I taught him the methods I knew that could help people like him when he suddenly asked, "Could we use a method that combines it with, oh I don't know...Call Of Duty?" I laughed as we tried to figure out a method that involved strategic warfare. Somehow we ended up doing strategy like used in combat in the calculus problems and it actually worked. As he checked his watch real fast, his eyes suddenly bulged out of his head. He shouted while slipping on his shoes and grabbing his pencils and math book "I'm so busted....dad's gonna kill me! I said I was going to be home by 6:00." "Wow, time flew by Alexander." He looked at his watch again and winced. I wish you could stay longer I thought to myself. Before I could say anything else he was out the door. Just as suddenly as he left, mom melted out of the shadows "Good job honey, I think you just landed your first boyfriend!" She exclaimed in her excited voice. "Thanks mom but really is that necessary?" "Oh dear, I suppose not." She shouted back at me while walking down the stairs. I'm sure the neighbors had gotten used to the loud home next door by now.I then hear a small creaking following up the stairs. I knew what was coming. I barely had time to duck before she started one of our daily unplanned combat sessions. She swept in with a side kick that left me out of breath and while I fought to recover, rolled around that I was on top of her strong frame and had my elbow to her neck as I calmly pinned her down. "Wow nice...job kid...it's one of...the few times you have beaten me." "You're gonna have to learn some new moves...kid." I laughed as I unpinned her. As she got up she shouted yet again for all the world to hear, "Cassandra is going to be the commander of 1,000's of fleets!" "Mom" I say. "Quiet remember?" "Oh right, sorry, oh and nice job on your test today honey, you aced it." "Thanks mom!!!!" This meant no making dinner or doing those stupid dishes tonight! I could finally relax. As i laid down reflecting on the days past events, how i was falling for Alexander, how energetic my mom had been, also the fact that I achieved the impossible and have a good friend now, wondering how the heck I'm going to pull off worship this week, and finally how much I want to be normal. "Honey the pizza is ready!" "Ok mom I'll be down in a sec." Wow I had no idea what was up with her, lately she was so energetic and upbeat I barely recognized her! What was with this brand new mindset? Mom is normally very strict. As they ate pizza cassandra couldn't help but notice the her mom looked like she was about to burst with excitement. "Okay mom...." "Hmm..." She said while still daydreaming away. "What the heck is wrong with you? You've been different lately." She just smiled a smile similar to that of Alexander's. "Honey....I'm dating someone." Omigosh did she just really say that?! I spat out my food, looking at her in disbelief. "You're joking right?" She just smiled. Oh man this was big news! My mom dating? Wow. So my birth dad, I always imagined him to be this perfect guy. But of course he wasn't, he was the one you would find in a bar having one-night stands with despicable girls with no moral whatsoever. He wasn't like that all the time to be honest, he was a charming christian lad who lived for God in everything he did. He and my mom were married and happy. I was about to be born. But his whole life flipped upside down for him when his dad died. He blamed God and gave up on everything. Even my mom! That was after she told him that she would never stop believing in God, even if he did. Then he left us just like that. He was a broken man, and I wish I could say I was a broken child because of it...but I wasn't. I mean seriously, I didn't even know him! To this day, my mom still thinks she's a horrible person and never dated anyone...until now. "His name is James Hendrickson, we used to be partners you know." She just smiled as my mouth went dry. "You knew who Alexander was and you didnt even bother to tell me that you're dating his dad?!?!" "Yup kiddo, had to keep it a secret until I was sure about it." I suddenly wasn't very hungry so I pushed my plate away. Mom just looked at me all concerned. Yeah she's faking, I ran upstairs ready to hack my heart out, you'll see what that looks like in a second. I grabbed the nearest weapon I could find off my wall and started hitting a holographic version I made of a certain bully at school from third grade. Poor guy, by the time I was done you couldn't even tell it was a person.
