The sound of the crumpling paper was the only noise throughout the silent room. Squeezing the paper ball tightly in her hand , Kaitlyn tossed it at the wall. "Well thanks for your life story but that's not what I needed to know." the words came out as a whisper as she studied the already decomposed corpse that sat on a chair against the wall. She couldn't help but take note of the brownish red stain on the wall and the shotgun still attached to the corpses hand. It only meant that he killed himself, she couldn't blame him, It was the quickest way out of this hell hole. Grabbing the shotgun she ripped it out of the corpses hand, she checked for ammo. It didn't surprise her when there wasn't any ,but if this man owned a shotgun then there had to be ammo somewhere. After taking another glance at the dimly lit room she placed the shotgun down and walked out .Slowly walking down the long hallway, walking into the first room that she saw, in which was a child's room. Oh god . She thought. Children really weren't her cup of tea, it was hard to kill them as zombies. Not because they were kids, because they were pretty fast little shits.
She took in the whole room as once, scanning to make sure nothing was in there. Once she felt like the place was safe she stepped in. The floor boards creaked under the dirty brown carpet that must have been white long ago. White spots on the carpet showed its true color. Kaitlyn tried to quiet her steps, she didn't want anyone or thing to hear her. But it seemed with each step the floor boards only screeched louder.
"Damn it." She whispered as she stopped dead in her tracks. She had heard something, Something that came from behind her, Something that didn't sound too friendly. In one fluid motion the raven haired girl pulled out her pistol, that stayed normally in her side pocket, pointing it at the sound. Oh great somethings in the closet. Holding the gun tighter in her hand she walked over to the closet slowly reaching out to open it. She could feel the beating of her heart about to jump out of her chest. Placing a hand on the cold door knob she slowly turned it, not making any other sudden noise. With one swift movement she swung open the door. Right as she did a black figure jumped out at her, a shriek pierced the silence , at the moment she couldn't tell if it came from her chapped lips or the creature in front of her . In a blink of an eye Kaitlyn was slammed onto the ground, a gasp escaped her as she hurried to get up but the pain in the back of her head was trying to prevent her too. Once off the dirty floor she stopped, My gun! In a panic she glanced around looking for the only thing she knew she had that kept her slightly safe. She caught sight of it across the room, she could only stand there frozen, she didn't want to move nor could she. The thing that jumped out at her could be anyway. Standing there after what felt like minutes she slowly started to move, inches at first then full fledged steps almost to the point where she was running. Once the gun was in her hands she slid against the wall catching her breath. What seemed to have jumped out at her was gone, or else it would have attacked her .
Scanning around her once again she slowly stood up, the pain in the back of her head seemed to have numbed. Holding the gun tightly in her hand she walked out of the room debating on rather just leaving the house altogether or sticking to her plan. She really did need that shotgun. She was running low on ammo but it wasn't worth dying over. Besides it was getting late, once the sun went down this place would be crawling in zombies and she didn't want to be around once it happened.
"I can't believe I'm doing this.." With that she turned heading further down the hallway, looking for the parents room or a guest bedroom. She couldn't pass that gun up, it was important, she needed it.
The comforting silence became almost haunting, as she walked quietly. The creature was bound to be lurking in the house. It could come out at any given moment to attack her. She was ready for it, It caught her off guard once but she wouldn't let it happen again. Seconds passed like minutes and minutes passed like hours as she slowly kept her steady pace down the rather long hallway. She caught notice that there was only one room left at the end of the hallway. Kaitlyn figured that her chances at finding ammo for the shotgun to be slim, but now she could confirm it. Entering the room she scanned it quickly before closing the door and locking it, what ever was out there couldn't possibly enter the room now.
With that she started digging through the drawers, tearing them out of the sockets and throwing whatever was inside onto the bed that stood behind her. One after the other she was ripping the drawers out of the cabinet only seeing socks and underwear scattering the bed. After the last one was ripped out she threw it at the wall watching it as it hit the cream wall. Causing a hole after impact. "Fuck." She mumbled, this was taking up all her time. She looked out the broken window to see the bright colors that lingered in the sky showing that dusk was setting in. She once again glanced around the room, there was another dresser and a small desk that held a skinny white lamp on it. There was no point to keep looking, once dark she would be trapped for the night and she didn't know how stable this place was. She walked over to the bed and gathered some of the socks that scattered the bed, shoving them in her bag. It got was starting to get cold at night, with the seasons changing. Winter was coming meaning she would take anything that would keep her warm.
After she shoved most of the socks on her bag she zipped it back up, flinging it over her shoulder and placing her arms in the holes where the straps were. The feeling that she was missing something started to form in her mind but she was going to ignore it. There was no time for this, with that she started to walk towards the door. Right as she took her step to leave, her foot landed on something soft that shot out from under her causing her to slip and fall. This was the second time today she had fallen and it was far to many. Laying on the floor she closed her eyes before turning her head to glance under the bed. Eyes widening she noticed a small box under the bed. "What the fuck?" Turning over she reached out under the bed, moving her hand until she had the box in her hand. 'SHELLS' littered the front of the box. For the first time this week she smiled, ripping open the lid she blinked a few times as she counted the shells, six , there was only six shells left in the box. Six more then what she had. She brushed off the question on why it was under the bed, she didn't care why it was under the bed she only cared that this trip wasn't wasted. Her luck was finally turning around. placing the six shells in her pocket she got up, rubbing her butt before hurrying over to the door, unlocking it and jogging out. Slowing down she walked over to the body she slowly bent down to pick up the shotgun she left. The feeling of relief washed over her until a noise was heard from behind her. She turned quickly pointing the unloaded shotgun at the noise. Nothing, there was nothing there. Lowering the gun a bit she heard the noise but again it was behind her, she turned raising her gun but it was to late, what ever it was ran into her. She landed on the floor once again , the breath was knocked out of her as a zombie rammed into her. Its face was inches way from her, she kicked flinging it off her as she hurried to get up. The shotgun was a on the ground where she dropped it, quickly reaching down to grab it she pointed it at the zombie that was coming at her again, pulling the trigger she waited for the Zombies head to fly off but it didn't.. Nothing came out. Realization hit once the dead grabbed her. Gripping the shotgun in her hand she swung at the monster hitting it with all she had. It hit the floor next to her, laying there not moving. Not risking anything she than began to smash its head in with the end of the shotgun. Getting up she hurried and rushed out the door she entered when she once gotten here. Once on her motorbike her shaky hands grabbed the key from her back pocket and started up the bike. Looking back at the house she flipped it off before riding off to her next location.
