Driftmark

Aemond couldn't help but look at Visenya differently since that night. There were only two things he desperately wanted from life - a dragon and to have Visenya has his future wife. And although they vowed themselves to each other, he couldn't help but feel it wasn't secure.

He wanted to approach his father and his half-sister and ask for Visenya's hand, but the boy was mind locked that they, especially Rhaenyra, would say no because he was a Targaryen without a dragon.

Useless. An Embarrassment.

"I'd rather marry our dear niece." Aegon said after the funeral when the guests have gathered for food and drinks.

Visenya was off to the side sitting with her cousins offering love and support for the tragic loss of their mother. Rhaena's head rested on her shoulder while Baela held Jace's hand. The necklace that Aemond gifted to her hung around her neck. She had not gone a day without wearing it.

Aemond's gut twisted. "Our sister is to be your future queen."

Aegon shrugged before downing another cup of wine. "Visenya's easier to talk to than Helaena. Ever since Beast claimed her, we've gone dragon riding a few times and I actually enjoy her company."

"You are already betrothed." Jealous flames threatened to burn Aemond alive.

"I don't want her. I want Visenya."

"You can't have her!" She's mine.

Aegon raised his eyebrow at Aemond, whose face was flushed with anger. "You'll never have a chance with her," he taunted. "You don't even have a dragon. Visenya could have me or any Lord in the Seven Kingdoms. Why would she waste her time on a pathetic excuse of a Targaryen like you? Our dear half-sister would be better off betrothing her to one of her bastard brothers rather than you."

He'll never be good enough for her.

Aegon's words pierced his heart. There's was a lump rising in his throat.

Don't cry, he scolded himself. Dragons don't cry. Dragons are not weak.

That's when he saw her. She's so big she momentarily blocked out the sun.

Vhagar.

The largest dragon in the world.

The dragon that used to be ridden by Lady Laena.

The dragon that was now riderless.

Aemond had an idea. He knew what he needed to do.

But at the same time, Rhaena whispered to Visenya how Vhagar's is hers to claim, and asks if she, Luke and Jace will accompany Baela to support her when she makes that claim tomorrow. Visenya squeezed her hand and promised.

That night, Visenya sneaked out to take Beast for a ride. She had stopped by Aemond's chambers but was surprised to find they were empty. It was a peaceful flight until she heard that familiar roar she had heard earlier that day. Glancing down, she spied Vhagar flying low, just above the sea. Listening carefully, she was positive she could hear cheering, and as Beasts descends, she swears she could catch a glimpse of silver hair.

"Rhaena must've claimed Vhagar," Visenya told Beast as she watched the ancient dragon land. "Let's go and congratulate her."

"It's him!"

"It's me."

"Vhagar is my mother's dragon!"
