My alarm clock blared through the silence, startling me awake. I had been in a pretty deep sleep. I think I was having a bad dream...
I sat up in bed, getting my bearings. I felt weird. Like a stranger in my own body. I had to look at my own hands to really believe I was me. I looked around my room, trying to resurrect some details from before I went to bed. It was foggy.
After a few minutes, I shook my head in an attempt to clear it. What was I doing? This was stupid. Of course I was me and of course I was in my room. I was awake and now I should be getting ready for school.
But I couldn't shake the weird feeling I had. For some reason, everything felt unfamiliar. But I recognized it at the same time. What was going on with me? What did I dream about that brought this all on? Or was it because of something else?
Eventually, I decided I didn't have time to worry about it. I showered, got dressed in my junior high uniform, and headed downstairs to meet my mom. She was busy putting a quick breakfast together before she headed to work. My dad was already gone.
"I went shopping yesterday, so don't buy anything for lunch on your way to school, you hear me?" she instructed. I waved her off. She forcibly embraced me before grabbing her bag and keys and headed out the door with a swift "Bye! I'll see you after school!"
I had been downstairs for less than a minute. And despite my best efforts of shoving this weird feeling aside, I still felt a little dazed. So everything that happened within that minute felt like a second while, at the same time, feeling like forever. All of it happening so fast but also in slow motion. What the hell was wrong with me?
I inhaled some food without really thinking about what I was eating and gathered some stuff for lunch. Carrying my bag, books and lunch crammed inside, I left for school.
God, I hated school. Everyone in that institution were idiots. It wasn't even hard, being the top of my class. Whatever. Not like I could do anything about it. I only hoped that UA would overlook the fact that I was from this dump.
"Yo, Bakugo!"
I was already exhausted just thinking about enduring another day surrounded by dunce heads. But now I was forced to be followed to school by the two that refused to leave me alone. I almost turned back for home.
"That homework was crazy, right?" the first said. Tsubasa. Finger extension quirk. Total moron.
"It was easy, you're just stupid," I shot back. He just laughed.
"I'm with you, Bakugo." Kai. Just as stupid. Also, a brown-noser. "I didn't think it was that bad!"
They continued jabbering the entire way to school. I was ready to turn around and blast them both to kingdom come, when something else caught my attention.
"Woah," Kai said, "what's going on?"
A huge crowd was gathered in front of the school. It was barely moving, and everyone was pretty quiet, so it wasn't a riot. I wondered if the school just hadn't been unlocked or something. That is, until I got closer.
People were whispering to one another, tears pouring from their eyes. Just beyond the students were flashing lights. An ambulance and a fire truck. I could hear radios scratching out instructions and other ambient noise.
"What the hell happened," I said, nearly inaudibly. I shoved myself to the front, demanding people to move aside. But when I got to the caution tape, what I saw... I would never get that out of my head.
A large, black, plastic covering was draped over something. From under the edges, there was a dark liquid, partially dried, seeping out. It was obvious what it was – blood. Which meant whatever was under the covering had to be a body. And if it was covered up instead of being on a stretcher, then it was clear that they were dead.
One of the officers, escorting our school principal, made his way to the covered body. They lifted the plastic up just a bit for the principal to see underneath. When he nodded his head, confirming that he knew the victim, the officer lowered the covering.
But not before I saw. Not before I recognized who was under it. Not before I realized what had really happened.
"He did it," Tsubasa whispered. "He actually did it."
I retched.
