Eileen could not contain the tears as they flowed freely down her cheeks. She was so happy it was inconceivable, and it was all thanks to the precious bundle held securely against her chest, swaddled in a light pink blanket. She never thought she would feel any emotion as heavily as she did at this moment. She had never been more sure of her decision to turn her back on her family. She had something she would never have had otherwise, a loving and doting husband and now a beautiful daughter, a proper family.

Severus, well Severus was confused. He was staring at the face of his long-dead mother looking happier and healthier than he had ever seen her in life. Not to mention, just moments ago, he had been dying on the floor of the shrieking shack looking into the eyes of the Potter brat, the eyes he shared with Lily. It was rather ironic now that he thought about it, the shack being his final resting place after the Mutt and Potter Snr. had tried to murder him there in his fifth year.

That matter aside, His eyes flicked suspiciously around the room and concluded that he was inexplicably alive, in a hospital, and quite young if his observations were to be believed.

"Oh, Tobias isn't she just the cutest thing." Severus heard his mother state, with the broadest smile he had ever seen grace her face, from his place in her arms. He had never heard his mother sound so... lively.

"Sure is, gonna be a looker just like her ma, I'll have to beat the boys off with a stick," Tobias replied in his thick Cokeworth drawl.

The deep timber of his father's voice proved effective in shaking him out of the trance of seeing his mother in her prime and allowed him to analyse once more the dubious situation he found himself in. The words his mother uttered were odd. He was not a girl nor was he cute by any definition of the word, not even as a child. He decided for the time being the best course of action would be to sit back and observe things further.

"What shall we name her?" His mother asked his father.

"How 'bout we name her after my ma, that stare she got reminds me of her, she was always such a stern woman," Tobias answered with a lopsided grin as the man looked down at him. His father's behaviour too was... unusual to say the least. He can't recall a single memory of a time when his father hadn't either been drunk on alcohol or anger.

"Phyllis Eileen Snape it is." His mother said, with yet another dazzling smile. He internally cringed at the name. He hoped with every bone in his body this was a hallucination created from his extreme blood loss, though he doubted it, everything was too real, right down to every sensation he felt. Phyllis was such a common name and ridiculously muggle to boot. He would not stand to have such a name bestowed upon him!

The current state of affairs he found himself in was equal parts confusing and despicable. The only conclusion he can draw from the, admittedly limited, information he has gathered thus far is that he had been... Damn that blasted old fool! Always raving about how death was but the next great adventure. Being reborn as a girl certainly wasn't Severus' idea of an adventure, never mind a great one. There was no doubt in his mind Albus knew this would happen, the omniscient bastard that he is. Once he got back to Hogwarts the first thing he was going to do was wring that bloody bastard's neck out!

Severus sighed and tried to reign in his temper, only to scowl once more at the resulting coos from his parents. Deciding to ignore them, Severus went back to plotting. Perhaps this second chance at existence could prove beneficial. He didn't care too much over the gender change, he hadn't ever been too attached to the equipment of his former body anyway. Besides this allowed him the chance to save Lily. Beautiful and brilliant Lily, who had always been far too good for this world. He would personally see to it that Lily got to live and maybe even fix a few of his own mistakes along the way.

Even if he had to live with the name Phyllis he would not let this second chance go to waste. Perhaps he could change his name eventually.
