Most people looked past Little Jeanne. She always noticed it. When you had a sister who commanded everyone's gaze from the swish of her purple skirts, flashing that amused yet knowing smile of hers, it was difficult not to. It was never a nice reminder to have, not when you crave for such attention that's more than a little or a younger. But she could never hate her sister. Not in that way.
Because Jeanne had something her sister would never dream of having.
A crown. The kingdom. The weight of every person's dreams. A duty. A responsibility.
Veronique had freedom. Jeanne did not.
And this freedom she used secretly, past the knowledge and radar of the castle. A secret she didn't dare bring to her sister for fear of losing her.
It's the right thing, she convinced herself, standing in that kitchen window, waiting for him to come.
It was a good thing, maybe, that people didn't pay attention to her a lot. Observing and filing information into her head had come into handy. From years of practice. From her sister, and..."Hello Little Jeannie," a familiar voice ringed her ears, feeling the grin in his voice.
"Don't call me that," Little Jeanne snapped. The snootiness hadn't gone away.
"Sorry, Veronique. Must be feeling cold, eh? How long have you been waiting?"
You used my sister's nickname, she thought but didn't say anything, just frowned. No one but she could see him, one of his camouflaging tricks. He had a smile on his face like a conniving cat, blue eyes twinkling with interest.
"You sure took your time getting here, Robin," she lowered her voice, careful not to make anyone hear. "The party's still in full swing, they're all busy celebrating the arrival of our guests."
"Guests?" Robin sneered. "Those kids could barely even keep up with me when I snagged their armor."
"Well, you should watch out for them. Jeanne says they'll be staying for a while. Jack Stalker is among them, after all. And so is this girl named Filomena, from another world."
"Another world?" Robin raised his eyebrow. "Oh! The one Queen Olga is hunting for."
Little Jeanne winced at the name. She knew Robin worked for her Uncle Richard who also worked for the Queen of the Ogres. It unsettled her most of the time, but Robin reassured her that he had no allegiance towards any of them.
"It's just a job, anything to earn my keep."
Well she had a job too, alright.
"They've offered to find Jeanne's crown," Little Jeanne murmured. At that, Robin grinned.
"So, where is it?"
"Not now, not in this pandemonium. I'll give it to you when I have time."
"I knew I liked you better."
That's a lie and we both know it, she thought. Still, she felt pleased. Anything to slander her sister.
Little Jeanne took a deep breath. "I also have other news. They got Riff out."
