How would it feel like if all the colors your very eyes could see today were all just nothing but shades of grey?

To Jihoon, all his life he never saw any other color but grey.

He was a monochrome or a mono for short.

Everywhere he looked at, all he saw were the shapes and sizes of this vast and mysterious world, painted in grey. Whether they were a lighter grey or a darker grey or a shiny grey or a rough grey or a smooth grey, it was just grey.

The people he saw on the streets or anywhere else were grey.

The animals he saw were grey.

The trees, grass and flowers he saw were grey.

The sun, sky and clouds he saw were grey.

The ocean, seas, rivers and lakes he saw were grey.

And the reflection of himself on the mirror he saw was grey.

It was all grey.

However, Jihoon has the chance to see past all the grey. He can be able to see colors, to see a rainbow. He can see the different hues, pigments, tones and shades of colors through a color rush and that would only be possible if he meets his probe.

A probe is like a mono's soulmate.

A probe is someone who can give color to a mono's life, literally and even figuratively. One look at their designated probe's face and a mono will experience a rush of colors invade and flood through their entire vision. A probe will replace all of the grey with all the colors this world has to offer. However, with the beauty of experiencing colors comes with a few negative side effects of a color rush for a mono, such as fainting and dizziness due to a mono not being used to seeing so many colors. The color rush will be too much for a mono to handle, especially the very first time it is being experienced.

Just imagine, one look at someone's grey face and then suddenly a forceful and foreign surge of so many colors comes rushing through, something comparable to barbarous winds hitting you inexorably right in the face. They often say it will feel like the eyes are being burned in a pleasant yet unpleasant way. The head will soon feel lightheaded, as the world is spinning uncontrollably around you. But this time, the world around the mono is now swirling with colors. Some monos will be lucky enough if their probes are quick to react in catching them once they faint from the color rush.

So, while a mono is going through a rush of colors in their vision, in a probe's point of view, they will see all the colors beautifully swirl in the mono's irises. It's a phenomenon that is an enigma and is beyond the reaches of science to explain how is that possible. A supposed condition that can be closely labeled with color blindness yet has the chance to break free from a plain grey visioned curse as they would say.

While the mono is entranced by the colors rushing all around them, a probe is entranced by the colors rushing through a mono's eyes.

Thus, a color rush is not only limited to a mono but also the probe.

Now, as much as Jihoon enjoys reading all of this wonderful things and experiences of a mono and probe meeting, he would much rather not meet his probe.

Why?

It is dangerous.

Once a mono meets their probe they will see colors. But once they don't see their probe, all the colors will vanish. Monos will experience decoloring, which is the opposite of a color rush. Decoloring is when a mono loses sight of all the colors the probe had allowed them to see. A mono will watch the colors fade and melt back into the stale and lonely gray world they were cursed to see for their entire lives. Another thing that comes after decoloring is the mono being at a highly weakened state. Just as the colors are lost, monos are left in a state of deprivation and a longing feeling that will reside in a mono after the decoloring.
