Jasper
Amara had been doing her best to avoid me over the last couple of months. She helped me with pack matters, and she was great at it, but as soon as it was over, she would rush from the room as fast as possible. If I entered a room, she would leave it. She let me hold her every night but more than once I had come to bed early to try to talk to her and she would pretend to be asleep. I was at the end of my rope and tired of the same fight repeatedly. Nothing I said seemed to make a difference to her.
I huffed as my paws pounded the ground as me and Xander chased down a deer. I lunged and missed, letting out a growl as Xander came to stand next to me.
"Are you ok?"
I rolled my eyes, "Yea, just mate shit."
He huffed out a laugh, "Yea I understand that. Mara still being impossible?"
I nodded my large head as we turned to head back to castle black. This is probably the last chance Xander will get to go on a run before the baby gets here. We fell silent as we shifted back in the barn and got dressed.
"I'm just not sure where to go from here."
"I don't know man, Mara seems like a tough cookie to crack."
I choked out a laugh, "Yea, no kidding."
Amara
My status as luna was now acknowledged by the whole pack. I had been able to keep my wolf a secret so far. I helped Jasper with pack matters, but had little else to do with him. I allowed him to hold me as we slept every night, but I never let anything else happen. We didn't really talk about anything other than a professional setting. I did my best to fall asleep before he came to bed so there was no chance of him trying to start a conversation. Some nights I would act like I was asleep, and I could hear his exaggerated sighs. I kept my word and didn't try to run again and before I knew it, we were heading back to see his sister Ari because her due date was coming up.
I sat on the floor of the nursery looking at the directions for how to build this changing table. I heard a huff behind me and looked up to an amused Ari standing behind me.
"What's up, babe?"
I looked down at the instructions, "The instructions are in Chinese or something. I can't read this shit."
Ari smiled at me and grabbed the instructions flipping them over to a set that was in English. My face heated and Ari laughed as she went to sit down in the rocker, huffing as she walked. It was amazing how fast her pregnancy had happened, and she was huge now.
I lifted my head as she spoke, "If you need help putting it together, let me know."
I narrowed my eyes playfully at her, "You know that isn't gonna happen Ri. You are about ready to pop, and your husband would have my head."
She frowned as I turned my head and I heard her mumble, "I'm about to have his head."
I grinned, "He's just trying to make sure everything goes right."
She sighed, "I know, but I think he forgets I've done this before."
I heard footsteps coming but I had to carry on and act like I didn't. They were so faint and far away that a human shouldn't be able to hear them.
"Speak of the devil," Ari said.
I let false curiosity fill my gaze and as the footsteps got closer, I let my look change to one of understanding. I watched her from under my lashes and she seemed to believe I was being genuine. I turned back to the changing table as Xander and Jasper walked into the room. I could feel Jasper's gaze on me as Xander talked to Ari. I did my best to tune out their conversation. Just because you can hear everything, doesn't mean you should listen all the time.
