When the girls got home, they told the boys they had a great time and went their separate ways. At dinner, everyone ate silently with Mr. Jackson, a tall man with dark brown hair and brown eyes who knew history well. After dinner, Mr. Jackson left, and the kids headed off to bed. In Maddie and Amber's room, Maddie was brushing her hair on her bed, and Amber was pacing. They were gravely silent. Finally, as they were climbing into their beds, Amber said, "We have to go back, Mad. 'because that was not a cat unless cats come in human sizes!"
"I know, Am. But maybe... it's not safe." Maddie said as they both lay down.
"I know it's not safe, Mad! It gripped your arm firmly, but we have to see who... or what it was and figure out why that thing... whatever it was, did that."
"And about that street too, Am. It will take some effort or a trick to get Jess and Kim to join us.""We'll leave in the morning and explore all day until we figure it out.""You're right, Am. Let's go to sleep, and we'll talk to the boys about it again tomorrow.""Good, well, goodnight, Mad.""Goodnight, Am." Maddie turned the light off, and they went to sleep.
The following day the girls woke early to fix the boy's breakfast. Maddie had bags under her eyes that Amber, of course, noticed. Maddie went to the dining room, and Amber followed.
"Bad dream," Amber stated more than asked."Actually, no, I couldn't sleep. I have a feeling that our luck could be running low." Maddie said. She yawned, and Amber said,
"Well, Mad. To tell you the truth I... I have the same feeling."
Kimberley entered and added, "Well, the food is done; go get the boys, Maddie. We'll set the table." Maddie sighed and walked upstairs to the boys' room. Once inside, Maddie tiptoed to Edward's bed and whispered, "ED. Eddie, it's time to get up. Ed. Edward Travis Collins, get up." Edward rolled over to Maddie and mumbled,
"No, it's not my full name. She's being awkward again." but he didn't open his eyes. Maddie began to shake Edward but gave up for a minute to think.
Then Maddie heard Jake say, "Don't worry, Mad. I'll get them up, and we'll be down soon." Maddie turned around to see Jake fully dressed in day clothes and smiling. Maddie stood, smiling, and asked, "How long... Never mind, you better be." Maddie then left the room and ran downstairs as fast as she could, grinning like a maniac.
Ten minutes later, the kids ate silently for a while at breakfast. Finally, Maddie broke the silence and said, "So guys, we want to go on another walk today... only girls again, but this time we'll eat lunch out, and I'm warning you, Edward, do not call." Jake and Edward grinned before Edward said,
"Sure, whatever, sis." Jake looked at Kimberley and asked,
"So are you going anywhere, special girls." Kimberley smiled smugly at her brother and responded, "Nope."
Jessie giggled, and Maddie said, "Come on guys, our only hangout joint is Derek's, and it's all of ours, and you don't want to share with your sisters all your time."
"And we get to exercise properly by walking," Jessie added.
The boys still didn't look sold out, so Maddie rolled her eyes and said, "That also means the TV's free for you guys to watch Harry Potter or Star Wars or whatever." That got to the boys, and they quickly rushed them off. But as they were leaving, Jake said,
"Be safe and be back by three, or we'll hunt you down."
Maddie grinned and replied,
"No need; if we're not back by three, we're dead."
"Why don't I follow you then?" Jake added, grinning at Maddie, who was trying not to laugh.
"Now that's a little obsessive, J," Amber replied, grinning as Jessie and Kimberley pulled the girls out the door.
