Lucas's POV
Today is my mothers funeral. This will be the saddest day of my life. Riley has been staying at my house for the past few days. She talked it over with her parents and they agreed as long as we don't sleep in the same bed so she sleeps in my bed and I sleep on the floor.
The funeral starts at 12:30 so Riley got up at 9:30. I barely slept the night before so I got up at 8. I ate 1 egg and 1 piece of toast but my sorrow kept me from eating it all. I showered and put on black slacks, a black coat, black tie, black shirt....pretty much black everything. I fixed my hair to the best of my ability and brushed my teeth. By the time I was completely ready, it was 9:33 and Riley had just got up.
"You're already ready?" She yawned.
I smiled a sad smile and nodded.
She smiled the same smile back and walked up and hugged me tight.
"I'm so sorry, Lucas. I wish I could fix this." She said into my shoulder.
I pulled away slowly,"I know. But you can't. Just being here for me is enough to make me feel a little bit better."
She smiled,"I'm gonna go get ready."
Riley's POV
I walked back to the bedroom and pulled out the mid-thigh length black dress that I brought from home. I laid it on the bed next to the heels I will be wearing and hopped into the shower.
I dried my hair and straightened it and put on some light make up. I brushed my teeth and sprayed some perfume. Then I slipped on my dress and put on the black belt that went with it. It was now 11:45 so I took a deep, long breath and put on my heels and walked into the living room.
Lucas was sitting on the couch with a sad look on his face.
"Hey," I grabbed his attention,"Are
You ready?"He met my eyes and got up,"As ready as I'll ever be."
I grabbed his hand and we walked out to his truck. We drove in sad silence on the way to the place where the funeral was being held. We got there at 12:15 and the place already was filled with lots of people.
"Wow," I said," I didn't know your mother had this many friends."
"Oh yeah," he sighed,"Lots of drinking buddies."
I glanced at him and saw a look of anger on his face. He clearly wasn't happy that the people his mother drank with showed up.
We walked hand-in-hand into the church. Maya was there too in support of Lucas. I saw her sitting on the front row.
Maya turned around and saw his and walked toward us," Hey ranger-"
She stopped herself,"Hey Lucas."
He nodded at her and she hugged him for a second.
We walked together to the front row and took our seats and waited for it to start.
At 12:30 sharp, a pastor walked up in front of everyone.
"Hello everyone," he said," Thank you for coming. We have gathered here to celebrate the life of Marisa Friar. There are a few people who would like to come up and say a few words. First her good friend, Joey Harrison."
A man with a douce bag goatee approached the front. He fumbled a lot so it was clear that he had drank before he came here. Seriously?
"Marisa was a freat griend,"He stumbled,"She was a great party girl......"
He continued to talk about ms.friar and I could feel Lucas start to tense up.
"....she's not to bad in the sack either-"
"That's it!" Lucas stood up and walked up to the man,"That is my mother you are talking about. You are ruining her funeral so get your drunk ass out of here."
Lucas's POV
I had the guy escorted out before I had to put him on his ass and really ruin this funeral. After he left I stood at the front and took control.
"I'm sorry for that," I told everyone,"Now I would like to say a few words about my mom. My mom wasn't perfect. No where near. But she loved me. And that's all I needed. To know that she loved me. I knew that even though she wasn't there all the time and even though we never spent quality time together, she loved me and I loved her. It was a mutual understanding. Even when I couldn't stand how she was acting, I loved her because she was my mom. She didn't live the most elegant life but she was my mom. She was the woman who raised me and made me the man I am today. Mom, I love you so much. Rest in peace."
With that I returned to my seat and the pastor began to close. After he dismissed everyone, we drove to the grave yard. I watched as my mother was lowered six feet under. I couldn't help but cry. Riley didn't say anything. She just held my hand.
Finally it was over. Now I could go home and pretend this never happened. I could forget for a little while.
I already started the emancipation process 2 days ago. I applied for a job at a fast food restaurant so that I could get granted emancipation. The rent at the house I currently live in is $500 a month.(we live in a dump.) I think I can make that work. Maybe something will finally fall into place.
When Riley and I got home, she fixed us something to snack on and we laid on the couch and watched a movie. Like the other day, we fell asleep with our bodies intertwined with our breaths in synch. I fell asleep and I forget the world for a little while.
