Letter From The Margaret Power Archive
Letter from Emma Strum to William Templeton-Wells requesting a reference for the post of governess at the home of Mr and Mr Deedes, of Broadstairs, dated June 8th 1841.
Dear William
Please forgive my impertinence in writing to you directly. I know I promised you and your family that I would no longer communicate and, indeed, see to it that I moved far away from London. The second promise I have kept scrupulously. But forgive me once more, and please allow me to ask one, final request of you, before I eventually disappear for ever from your life.
I have had the good fortune to stumble upon a position, out here in Broadstairs, at the home of a well-respected family, named the Deedes. They have two young daughters, Penelope and Selina, whom they wish me to instruct in the usual subjects girls of their age will require in life. Their oldest child, Richard, is now away a public school.
As of today, I have met with the family on just the one occasion, and I think I have made a most agreeable impression thus far.
Therefore, to guarantee a favourable outcome, regarding the above position, I would require that you, or indeed your wife, would do me the great service (a service I well know I do not deserve) and present the Deedes with a letter of introduction and a reference outlining my suitability for the position of governess.
You can rest assured, this shall be the one and only letter, the one and only demand on your time, and on your good nature. Afterward, you will not here from me again.
For the present, the small gratuity you gave to me when I left your household is fast evaporating, and I am in need of paid employment most urgently. For you would surely not countenance that I should fall any further than I have already.
I can be reached at Mrs Gregory's boarding house here in St Peter's.
I await your swift reply.
Your sincerely
Miss Emma Strum
PS The postal address of the Deede's residence is as follows: Haine House, St Peter's Road, Broadstairs.
