Michael immediately ran over to me.
—what is that?— he asked, studying my eyes.
— I don't know, my head is about to explode!—I said grabbing his arm.
—what a fucking joke!— Miles shouted.
We all turned to face him, but instead of him, we saw...
me?
—Miles?— Peggy asked, walking over to him.
—me! who else?—he asked, smiling.
We stared at him in surprise, and he slowly walked over to the mirror and looked at himself.
After a moment of silence, he burst out loud:
—Why do I look like Steven?— He started to panic.
—Because you're a shapeshifter.— Skylar said, just appearing in the bathroom.
Everyone jumped at the sight of her, and Miles had time to turn back into himself.
—I am what?— Michael asked.
— shapeshifter. In case you haven't noticed, we all have eyes lit up like nightlights.—
she remarked, drawing us all to the mirror.
Her eyes were black, mine green, Peggy's red, Michael's blue and Miles's purple.Suddenly, the bathroom door slammed shut and the lights went out. The whole room started to shake, so much so that we all fell to the floor.
Instinctively, I grabbed Michael, who wrapped his arms around me.
The shaking lasted a good few minutes before everything died down and the bathroom door opened again.
—my head...—Peggy said softly, rising from the ground.
I quickly got up and helped her to her feet. She smiled at me.
I tore my gaze away from her and saw Michael staring at us as he helped my sister up. When our eyes met each other, he immediately dropped his gaze to the floor.
—well, great! And no one's going to help me.— Miles said, getting up.
We crawled to the door at a snail's pace, then Michael swung it open for us.We expected a school corridor, but we came out in a huge, black room, in the middle of which was a platform in the shape of a circle. There stood a short, petite woman with long black hair, and next to him a man probably two meters tall.
—Hello, nightwings.— the woman said.none of us said anything. I looked at Peggy, who had her eyes fixed firmly
people who stood before us.
— what are these people?— Skylar asked, grabbing my forearm.
—I don't know, but hold my hand.— I said taking her hand in mine.
The man in front of us noticeably changed his expression as soon as I approached them along with my sister.
They both looked at each other, horror on their faces.
—what are you doing here?—he finally asked.
—we would like to know ourselves.— Miles said, coming over to us.
—you shouldn't be here!—the woman replied.
a moment of silence passed, and they stepped off the platform and stood directly in front of us.
The man raised his hand towards us, and after a moment my head started to hurt again.
This time so hard that I could feel the blood running under my nose again.I heard Skylar scream in pain. And Peggy. Miles. Michael.
I fell to my knees.
I turned my head to Michael and saw that his eyes were shining brighter than before.
I looked back at the two standing in front of me.
-„fuck!" man said, lowering his hand.
Silence fell, and all I could hear was the groans of pain from my friends around me.
—why them? You were supposed to get the adults! They're still kids!— he turned to the woman.
— it shouldn't be them! I clearly chose the adults! It must be due to some short-circuit...—she replied, walking over to me and grabbing my chin and lifting it up.
She stared at my bloody face for a while.
— take that hand away. —I gasped through my teeth.
— Mrs. Chi.— the man interrupted.I smiled slightly, still looking into her eyes.
She took her hand from my face, and I immediately got to my feet.
—Will you tell us what the fuck this is about?—Michael asked, wiping his nose.
— you shouldn't be here.— said Mrs. Chi.
— we already know that, but why are our eyes glowing and why can I teleport?—Skylar asked, after a moment showing what she said.
The man approached her.
—how old are you?— he asked, looking down at her.
—fifteen.— she answered him, swallowing down.
He sighed and then looked up at us.
—you? — he asked again, pointing at Michael.
— eighteen.—he replied quickly.
Now he pointed at me.
— I'm eighteen too.— I whispered.
Then on Peggy.
—eighteen. —
Finally on Miles.
— sixteen. —Mrs. Chi sighed loudly and I heard the patter of her high heels moving away from us.
— so now, you're going to have to listen to a fifteen-year-old girl.— he laughed lightly. He walked away from us back to the platform, then gestured with his hand that we should approach him.
we did.
— My name is Mr. Reed. The woman who chose you here is Mrs. Chi. Both of us, every dozen or so years, choose superheroes whose task is to protect their own city and the people in it. — he told us.
— could you explain to us what is really going on with those glowing eyes?— I asked, and he immediately showed us a huge screen above him.
— black colour. Teleportation.— he began. — the only thing different about the five of you is that the oldest man in the group usually gets the black color, and you got the youngest girl. Unfortunately for you... a person with black eyes is The leader of the group— he explained.
Skylar looked at me in horror.—can't we change it somehow? I don't know if she can handle it...—I said but he cut me off.
—purple colour. shapeshifting. The youngest man in the group gets it.— he explained.
—blue color. Laser vision. The oldest woman in the group gets it.— he said, and Michael looked at him.
— I think something went wrong here too, I don't have blue, I have red. — Peggy said.
Mr. Reed just looked at her, then continued.
— Red colour. super strength. one of the men should get it. It is the most difficult force to control and can drive its owner insane. —
—What happened to the last person who had it?— Peggy asked.
The man sighed, then told us a story that we knew well.
—His name was Rowan Zimmer. He killed himself very recently, and the Nightwing group could barely manage without him.— he explained.— wait! THAT Rowan Zimmer? Local shoemaker?— Miles asked.
—Yes. As far as I know, that's what he was known for in the city.—he confirmed.
— the whole city lived with his suicide. —Skylar whispered
— as you can see, many people have secrets that would not even occur to others.—
The screen behind him went black again.
— what about my power?—I asked, stepping closer.
He looked at me and ran over to me.
—What color are you boy?—He asked.
—Green...—I whispered.
His face changed its expression.
—it is impossible.— he laughed. —tell the truth. —He grabbed my arm.
I concentrated so hard to prove my point to him. I didn't know why it was so impossible for him.I opened my eyes, revealing them glowing green.
—It's not possible...—he whispered.
—why?— Michael asked.
— color green disappeared by itself many years ago. The last time this power was held by a woman named Helen Graham.— he explained.
— what's so strange about that?— Skylar said.
—It was 1759,— he said, turning to face us.
