7. Charlotte

After saving Jaspers life, thanks to the seaweed we found, I stay with him all night, so I can be there when he wakes up, but end up falling asleep, unintentionally. I end up waking up to hushed voices, and a blanket over me. I look around, still groggy from sleep when I see Jas awake and looking less like death "Jas!" I shout as I jump up and hug him tight "hey, I'm ok little sis" he tells me "thank god, I thought you were a gonner, and Murphy kept trying to kill you when you were out" I mumble into his shirt "wait Murphy tried to kill me?" He asks "umm yeah, but don't worry, I'd never let him do that. I can't lose my big brother" I tell him.

The next day everyone keeps working on the gate and making sure the grounders can't get in "this section should be finished by tomorrow" I overhear Murphy telling El, who's standing a little away from me, as I'm helping with the gate. One of the guys working just next to me falls down while carrying a small tree "hey!" Murphy shouts and starts to stalk over "you think the grounders are just gonna sit around and wait for us to finish the wall? Maybe we should let the little girl do the lifting for you" I spot a little girl, Charlotte, who he's talking about "I just need some water ok? Then I'll be fine" the guy tells him "Murphy, get this guy some water" El tells him. As I get back to what I was doing I hear the guy and Murphy arguing, I look to see Murphy peeing on him "what the hell Murphy!" I shout "he wanted a water break. Get back to work!"

I walk off when I see Jas and Avi walking towards the opening of the gate "what are you two doing?" I ask as Avi walks further into the Forrest "trying to show Jasper there's nothing to be afraid off" she answers "jasper it's been a week ok? You got a second chance you gotta use it" she says, then screams as she gets pulled into the bushes "Octavia?" Jas shouts "AVI?!" I start walking to where she disappeared when someone jumps out startling us "hey jerk!" Avi exclaimed "get the hell out of here" I tell him "jasper, come on. There's nothing to be afraid of" suddenly he falls and looks shocked at the ground in front of him "what is it?" I ask him but he's silent. I looks to see what's got him so spooked when I see human fingers just laying there on the ground "what the hell?"

In the tent, me, El, Jasper, Avi and Clarke are looking at the knife we found next to the fingers "this knife is made of metal from the dropship" Clarke states "what do you mean?" Jas asks her "who else knows about this El looks at me "no one. We brought it straight here" Avi answers him "Lola?" Jasper whispers "it means the grounders didn't kill wells. It was one of us" "so there's a murderer in the camp" my brother asks more to himself "there's more than one murderer in this camp. This isn't news. We need to keep it quiet" "Els right" I speak up Clarke looks at us both before starting her way out of the tent before I block her path "get out of the way Lola" "be smart about this" I tell the blonde "look at what we've achieved. The wall, the patrols. Like it or not thinking the grounders killed wells is good for us" El tells her "good for you, you mean. What? Keep people afraid and they'll work for you? Is that it" she looks at us again "yeah, that's it" El and Clarke are basically in each others faces at this point "but it's good for all of us. Fear of the grounders is building that wall, and besides what are you gonna do? Just walk out there and ask the killer to step forward? You don't even know who's knife that is" "oh really?" She pulls the knife out "J.M. John Murphy. The people have a right to know" she marches out of the camp, passed us.

We get out just in time to see Clarke push Murphy "you son of a bitch!" "What's your problem" chuckles "recognise this?" She holds up his knife "it's my knife. Where'd you find it?" "Where you dropped it after you killed Wells" this seems to get everyone's attention as it goes quiet "where I what?" "The grounders killed Wells, not me" "I know what you did, and your going to pay for it" she gets all up in his face "really? Bellamy you really believe this crap?" He asks "you threatened to kill him we all heard you. You hated Wells" "plenty of people hated Wells. His father was the chancellor that locked us up" "yeah but your the only one who got in a knife fight with him!" She shouts "yeah, I didn't kill him then either" "tried to kill Jasper too" Avi chips in "come on. This is ridiculous. I don't have to answer to you, I don't have to answer it anyone" "come again?" me and El say in unison "guys, look I'm telling you. I didn't do this" "they found his fingers on the ground with your knife" El tells him "is this the kind of society that we want? You say there should be no rules, does that mean we can kill each other without- without punishment?" Clarke asks everyone "I already told you. I didn't kill anyone" "I say we float him" someone says "yeah!" Come a bunch of cheers from people who obviously agree "that's not what I'm saying" she defends herself "why not? He deserves to float. It's justice" some guy I never guide learned the name of tells her "revenge isn't justice "it's justice, float him" she same guy says and starts a chant of 'float him, float him.

I look at Murphy and see him trying to make a run for it when someone trips him up and half of the camp gathers around him, kicking him anywhere they can "get off him!" Clarke shouts but of course no body listens to her and then Avi tries to go in and help but El thankfully holds her back.

They start to string him up to a tree with Clarke still trying to get them to stop "you can stop this!" she looks at me and El "they'll listen to you!" She looks at Bellamy "Bellamy! You should do it"and the same guy as before starts a Bellamy chant, him and his chants are really starting to annoy me. As they're all chanting his name and Clarke trying to get him to stop them I start to agree with Clarke. I mean even if he did kill Wells, we don't have the right to kill him.

"Bellamy I don't think you should do this" I say to him, he looks at me before walking up and kicking the stool from under Murphy, hanging him. "How could you?" Clarke cry's "this is on you princess" he shouts at her, I grab Clarke making her face me "should have kept you mouth shut Clarke. This is your fault" I point at Murphy hanging from the tree with rope around his neck.
