I take a seat on the worn flannel couch in the family room and pat the top of my lap. The young girl wonders over and takes place on my lap. I grab a blanket and wrap it around her shoulders, crossing the corners in front of her and tieing them in a knot, so it doesn't fall off. My hands gently rub her boney shoulders, and with a gentle nudge of my forefinger to her chin, I get her eyes to meet mine. I stared deeply into the dull grey-tones and the complex mesh of faint hues of sky blue. My head bows, and my lips tremble anxiously as the story I am about to tell massive and a child her age should not know the horrific truth of this world we live in. Yet, it needs to be known.
I clear my throat, straighten out my spine, shimmy my shoulders, and begin.

It was discovered many centuries ago by chemists, physicists, biologists, and ecologists that humans harbor vital elements of life that originated in the center of stars eons ago. Together they generated solar flares, waves of energy that radiated across the cosmos, giving light to the dark abyss that is space. As the stars died, they released more and more of these life-giving elements and their boundless energy potentials out into the unknown. Their energy is transferable as energy can not be created nor destroyed, and when some of the stars died eons ago, they radiated their energies into space in the forms of elements; hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and phosphorus. These elements are crucial to life, and they are found in humans. They make up the backbone structures of our DNA. Essentially, humans are made up of stardust. When a child is born, there is no doubt they are destined for something greater than themselves as they are filled with limitless potential; after all, it's ingrained in their DNA. It's up to us, though, to see how we harvest this boundless energy and potential to make a difference in this world.
It is for this reason that we must not do anything to taint ourselves with something not of this Earth. We must add to our infinite energy source, because although it is limitless, there is no telling where our limit will take us. The Rein methods we use ensure that we are only adding to our pure energy sources and not taking them away. They are derived from this Earth, never genetically modified, only extracted and isolated. The serums that have kept others alive all are composed of the life-giving elements and nothing more. Then when we die from natural causes or while using natural techniques, our boundless energies can transfer to the next generation. It is a wholesome cycle of powers that are shared between all those who walk on this Earth. It is for this reason that most of us do not fear death. When we die, that is the most honorable way to fulfill our purpose for helping the greater good.
However, some fear of death. This fear makes them think illogically, and as a result, they use the "M" techniques. These techniques do not harbor life-giving elements. Instead, they are laced with genetically modified structures of proteins, the technology that is meant to stay separate from humans is now being intertwined as their DNA is split, implanted with biochemicals that harm them and then ourselves. Those who have used these methods no longer possess the limitless potential the stars have given them. As a result, they are lesser than humans. But just because they are more minor, does not make them a threat.
Although humans have limitless potential, we all have an expiration date. These tainted humans, these cyborgs, they do not possess this same expiration date. The methods they have used gives them more time, more strength, more intelligence, but it comes with a price. Everything comes with a price. Aside from having those they know die before them, they also can no longer fully love. How can they? They are robotic, made up of manufactured biochemicals, infused with elixirs that do not possess the divine elements; their DNA is not what was given to them, it is now what man has given them.
It was a hundred years ago when one pivotal accident led to the strict laws that we have now. A woman was given the "M" techniques, and afterward, she was not the same. She was rational beforehand, model citizen, successful, but after her accident, her body started to collapse, and her time in this world was coming to a swift end. Her lover wanted to bring her back, though, and employed doctors with a hefty bribe to help bring their lover back. The doctors succeeded, and they were astonished by what they could do with these techniques. They started distributing them freely for a while, and everyone thought it was a good idea. Death rates decreased, there were quicker recoveries, and since these practices and procedures cost a lot, many pharmaceutical companies became multi-billion dollar companies overnight. It seemed to be going so perfectly, but that was just an appearance.
