Chapter 4

The next morning I was up woken by my alarm at 6. I'd been up late doing meal prep for the week, calling Phil cause my mother had lost her phone already and washing the sheets and towels that had been piled in the laundry basket and on my bed since who knew when. When I actually got to bed I fell asleep pretty quickly to the sound of rain on the roof and the soft whooshing of wind in the trees. My body was not appreciating the lack of sleep and registered its complaints in a foggy feeling in my head and truly horrible morning breath. I shuddered at the cold when I went outside my covers and spent 15 minutes hovering on the edge of sleep debating how bad I needed to get up. My bladder finally decided for me and I emerged from my fluffy cocoon to grace the small bathroom with my presence.

I peaked outside the small window as I was brushing my teeth and was met with a blotchy wall of white. It was misty, still drizzling, cold enough for two jackets and dark enough not to bother my still sleepy eyes (unlike the lights). I donned a thick fluffy jumper and thin rain jacked over a long- sleeve and singlet, and was warm enough to almost fall back to sleep at the dining room table. Then I remembered I had to pick up Charlie. I made coffee, put it in some travel mugs, got a premade lunch (yay for meal prep) and hovered in the entrance trying to remember if I needed anything else. My backpack was by the door with lunch, I had coffee, I had keys- I didn't have keys.

I managed to drag myself out of the house with travel mugs and keys in hand by 6: 20. It was only a 5 minute drive to the hospital and I couldn't see any reason to delay. The cold air was like a slap to the face after the relative warmth of the house. I locked the house with a clumsy hand and burrowed into my collar to protect as much of my face as possible from the cold. The cruiser was just as cold and took a good 20 seconds to decide to start. I kept the window down the whole way to the hospital to keep me awake, and my eyes were still drooping when I parked and headed up to spring my dad.

Charlie was waiting impatiently in his room when I arrived, dressed and looking annoyingly awake. I greeted him with a sleepy nod and "I'll go get the paperwork sorted" before going in search of Doctor Cullen while Charlie cheerful searched for his shoes. The Doc was in his office, with a kid around my age, both of them looking too awake for this hour, the door wide open. Since they were only staring at eachother and if anything was happening I was too groggy to notice. "Doc, you gonna let me spring Charlie or do we need to stage an escape?"

The Doc laughed and got his papers together while the kid looked at me weird and gripped the arms of his chair. "I've got the paperwork here, just need his signature and he can fly the coop." He introduced the kid as his, then left us as he went to release Charlie. The newly introduced Edward was attractive, deathly pale, looked really awake and kinda pissed. Understandable. It was waaaaay to early to be functional.

"I'm Bella." He just stared at me. "I've got to go. Nice meeting you." he continued to say nothing as I trudged back to Charlies room. Weird kid, but I couldn't exactly talk. It was too early anyway.

Charlie and I made our slow escape to the car and sat there for a good 5 minutes drinking coffee and trying to wake up (me) or relishing the cool air while leaning against the hood (Charlie). Charlie was even happier after coffee and outside time, chatting away happily as he drove me to the school. It was 6: 50 by the time we got there, the coffee was finally kicking in and I was feeling more alive and ready for some learning. Charlie dropped me in front of the office and continued on his merry way shouting the words to songs on the radio.

The school was a collection of tall brick buildings joined by covered walkways, with so many plants even the buildings looked green. The front building had 'Front Office' in white on a plank above the door, hedges lining the walkway to it, a heavy door that I struggled with for a second and even more plants inside. There was a waiting room with plastic, a counter with various trays and stacks of paper and even more plants, with their owner sitting behind the counter watering some of the smaller bits of green on her desk. The large red haired woman looked up with a smile and greeted me with a bright "Hello dear. How can I help you?"

"I'm Isabella Swan, I've just been enrolled."

"Of course! It's been a while since we've had a new student here you know." She rifled through the paper on her desk and handed over several documents. "Here's your schedule, here's a map with classrooms and routes highlighted. Here's a piece of paper to have signed by all your teachers, and here's the blanket permission slip that needs to be signed by your parent or guardian. I think that's it. Your first class is English in Building 3, that's one building down from this one, just on the left."

I thanked her, got the obligatory 'hope you'll like it here' and exited the small room. The air was still cold and the mist made everything a bit indistinct. I had a walk around, familiarised myself with the eight buildings, gym and cafeteria, found discovered every building had a bathroom and made my way to building 3, with a big blue 3 painted on the side of it.

It's not 1 am for a change. its 9 pm instead. This is the only productive thing I've done today, so yay me. It's more than 1000 words and much of that is waffling so enjoy that.

Oh, and we met edward. He's pale, awake and pissed. I'm going to write a bit more and have a lot of caffeine so there might be a nonsensical next chapter up tonight. Enjoy!
