It was sometime during the middle of the day. A large office. A symbol of almost unlimited power. Big Flags in what felt like every corner. Stacks of papers piling the desk as time goes on slowly. A woman in a suit and skirt. A wedding ring on her finger squeezed the life out of her peach skin.
The wedding ring was nothing more than pure diamonds. Whatever man bought it for her. He had money. She was privileged and with security cameras covering the halls of the white house and going all the way to her office. She was protected. Utterly safe from any and everything around her.
Suddenly she got a call on the phone on her brown wooden desk. She picked it up and simply nodded and then said "Let him in". When the general walked in he looked not only old but almost lifeless. He touched his forehead like he had a headache. He looked like he was going to pass out and die. The general whispered to himself.
"Are you working hard or hardly working?" said the General trying to straighten himself as he said it.
"Unfortunately for those who seek to hurt this country. I'm working hard, very hard," she said laughing and smiling. Her short hair cut moving with her head.
The President walked over and grabbed a stapled packet. She looked at it closely. She then pulled her reading glasses off her shirt.
"I'm trying to give you and the Secretary of Home Defense their job back. Knightfall and other known rumors here in this very city. They're making it obvious. There's been far too many vigilantes and superhumans roaming the streets unsupervised. When I was elected I said 'I'd make change'. This is the way to do that," she stated, oozing with conviction.
She handed the General the stack of paper as he was in too much pain to even look at it. He put it down to his side almost immediately.
"Have you heard of the one haunted mansion in Maryland?" said the General.
"You're the General of the United States military... don't tell me ghost stories." the President chuckled.
"Well, that's exactly what it is, allow me to try and shift your perspective on crime fighters." said the General. "The year was 1995 Jack Green was part of the best covert ops teams in the world, actually in history. He was joined by Lamar Edwards codename Imperial. Liam Johnson's codename is Shade. Liam's brother William...," the General paused for a moment.
"...codename NRG. Benjamin Gonzales codename Bolt. Edwards is off the grid. No one can track Liam. Benjamin was never to be seen again, assumed dead." he emphasized assumed as he started to take a long pause.
"Jack was a tough kid, too tough for his good. Worked at a lousy restaurant, the perfect candidate for Project R.E.D Ghost of experiment group 33," said the General.
"R.E.D, 33?" said the President even more confused than she was at the start of the conversation.
"Renewable Energy Division the first 32 trials were inconclusive. Their plan with Jack and company was to test a paranormal artifact with plasma energy and see how it affects human form... so Jack died." said the General with a threatening calm.
"Died! Just like that. That's horrible!" she whined.
"Death was the point. It worked, but a little too well. His form was unstable. Releasing large amounts of energy. To stop it he was put in a special suit. Originally it was a prototype suit for the Astro Launch. He put it on too late... but better late than never. Otherwise, he'd be a walking nuke, with the ability to reload. For the past 14 years, he's been acting like some type of superhero, not like that's new! Seems like fairy tales found their way out of the page," the General chuckled; he was far too relaxed.
