"A prank?" Briggs said flatly, rubbing her temple.
"I apologize for the childish behaviour of my squad mates, Captain," Mavar said, "I never thought they would actually do it. I should've stopped them and I take full responsibility."
"So," Captains Briggs said, "you're telling me that three recruits - barely junior mages, might I add – were able to cast a spell of mass telepathy, as well as, not one, but seven beams of light across the world?"
Mavar didn't dare answer that. His lie had fallen through.
Briggs sighed. "Tell me, Elf, are you religious?"
"Yes, Captain."
"Nalamist?"
"You could say that."
Briggs kept her sceptical face. "Then why do I not see you weeping tears of joy? For you have been chosen by one of your Gods?"
Mavar remained quiet.
"You don't think it's God at all, do you?" Briggs said, as if thinking the same thing.
Mavar paused. "I do not."
Mavar didn't call himself a Nalamist, but he believed in God – the True God, the one in his head, who had already chosen Mavar long ago.
"We agree with you." Chief Ghuil said, looking pensative to the side. Mavar relaxed and he could feel Nerith do the same at his side.
"But," Captain Briggs warned, "this is still an entity capable of magic most of us would only be able to dream of."
"'Entity'?" Nerith asked. "So, you don't think it's from Nalgaria?"
"No." Briggs said. "Unless your Archmage has been in a comedic mood, Tiefling."
Nerith glared at the sarcasm.
"Reports are already coming in." Briggs sighed. "Whatever this thing is, it seems powerful enough to deliver on its promises."
"We can help you." Ghuil said from the side. "I'm sure King Zenir will want to have a look at those artifacts as well."
"With all due respect, Captain," Joel said, "I'm not sure we want Korfez's help after tonight."
"I'm not sure you have much of a choice, son." Chief Ghuil said.
The tent was silent for a moment.
"We'll take it." Nerith said. Mavar and Joel turned to her. "We'll take the help."
