Cori Worst was getting directions from mice, which was surprisingly normal for her. It sounded completely and utterly stupid to somebody who was unfamiliar with Cori, but at the same time, pretty much nobody was familiar with Cori, so that meant nobody was there to say that. The mice had yet to fail her, after all.

The cold bit down hard, but still, Cori refused to actually put on the jacket around her waist for reasons she didn't even understand herself. People have a funny way of doing that kind of thing to themselves sometimes. Above was the bright full moon, perfect for a werewolf to come out. Occasionally, cars passed by and lit up Cori's vision for several seconds before vanishing into the distance. Some apartment lights were still on. Sometimes, other shadows in the distance moved. Cori remained completely unnoticed.

If you had been there, on that night, in one of those cars, or been one of those shadows, yes, you may have seen Cori. But you would not have noticed her. Her presence likely wouldn't even register in your head. The scrawny kid with short brown hair wearing a black tee shirt with one thick white stripe in the middle would have been only part of the background to you.

Nighttime in cities could seem scary, but to somebody so used to it, and to somebody so nonchalant as Cori, it really wasn't. Not much was particularly scary to her, anymore.

She took a left down an alleyway, hiding the moon behind the skyscrapers, which then re-emerged when she returned to the sidewalk. After that, she took a left, which was the way towards her home. It was nearly 10 PM, after all. Cori wasn't exactly worried about how much sleep she was gonna get, but instead worried Kyle would wake up and panic when she was gone.

Cori flicked her head to the left, noticing something.
Was that...?
Oh, that was Dr. Twobrains's lair.
The magic of apathy is simply not caring that you're passing the lair of the most dangerous villain in your whole entire hometown.

As she was about to move on, not caring, she saw a shadow.
Her mind paused to wonder who in the world would also be out so late at night, and without noticing, her legs stopped moving, and she stopped and stared to question in her own head.

And then a car passed by and lit up the shadow.

Oh.
OH.
Silver Boxleitner.
The most terrifying student in all of the 5th grade.

In her head, Cori was screaming at herself to keep walking, but her legs disagreed.

Cori was scared of very little.
Silver was a part of the "very little" category.

She wasn't

Shrouded in darkness, across the street, and being the only breathing living awake person in view automatically made Silver the most terrifying thing Cori had ever witnessed.

Maybe this was how all those other kids saw Silver constantly.
A thousand teeth that were sharp as razors and looked strong enough to crush any bone, painted sparkly black nails that looked sharp enough to slice and rend flesh apart, eyes like daggers pressed to your throat, the grin of a confident predator, and an air of danger and authority that made Cori either want to run, apologize, or both. Apologize for what? Cori did not know. Apologize for entering her field of view. Apologize for looking at her. Yes. That was it.

Then Silver's head flicked over in her direction, suddenly noticing Cori.

Cori was not used to being noticed.
She was used to being seen. Plenty of people saw her every day. But, not one of those people ever picked up on her presence or said a single word to her or even bothered to think or wonder about her for a single second.

This was the first time in an impossibly long amount of time Cori had been noticed.
And it was by the most feared 5th grader in the city.

And her eyes lit up.
And her face spilt into a grin.
But...
Why did that grin look...
Not completely and utterly evil?
There were a lot of words somebody could use to describe Silver. Friendly was not one of them. Or at least not one the average person would use.
