A sharp pain fired over the skin of my cheek followed by a tingling sensation. I opened my eyes slowly and cautiously. "It's about time you woke up," said a woman sitting at my side, her face merely inches from my own. Her woodsy green eyes were practically glowing with curiosity as she peered down at me. "What's your name?"
I put a hand to my aching head as she helped me sit up. "C-Chastity."
"Nice to meet you Chastity, I'm Serena." Sitting up I was able to really see her. She was shorter than me with a very petite frame. Her skin was paper white and her red hair fell straight to just below her chin with a bleach blonde streak on either side over her temples. "What are you in for?" Her voice was strong and commanding, it seemed out of place when paired with her appearance.
I shook my head, trying to rattle free any information as to why I was here—or even how I got here for that matter. "I-I can't remember anything."
Serena shrugged. "It'll come back to you eventually. Trust me. It's the same with everyone. They knock us out and toss us in here until our trial. Maybe yours will go better than mine went. Most people don't come back. I, however, am sentenced to eternity in this hell cell."
I looked around us. The room was fairly roomy with four beds. Mine and one other were against the largest wall across from the barred wall whilst two others sat opposite each other against the shorter walls. The room was fairly bare other than the beds and lights. "Who are they?" I whispered nodding to the other two that sat together on the bed farthest from mine.
"They're twins. Katherine and Philip. They got thrown in here after Kat tried to bring Phil back from the dead. He told her everything and blah blah blah it all ended in this shit hole. They're awaiting an eternity in the pit. It's basically where you spend forever stuck by yourself if a dark cave-like hole in the 'ground'. I've heard it makes even demons go psycho. Apparently if you try to bring someone from here back to the land of the living it's super illegal if the dead person in question decides to actually listen to 'the call of resurrection'."
Ignoring the most concerning parts of Serena's explanation I chose to focus on the twins. It was easy to see how the two were related. They were both tall with the same angelic blonde locks of hair that curled to frame their sharp faces. Their eyes were pitch black with anger clearly swirling within the irises. There was a protective nature about the two, almost as if they were shielding one another from terrors only they could see.
"Yeah they aren't really into the whole 'new friends' situation. They prefer keeping to themselves. Even with the whole eternal isolation looming over their heads." She shrugged lightly. I could see the sadness she felt masking her face.
"What did you do to get in here?" I asked.
She smiled sheepishly. "I thought trashing the Consul's trial room would be a brilliant idea. As it turns out that is illegal. It was stupid but I did it in retaliation to my brother's sentence. He is one of those in the pit."
"I'm sorry." I didn't know what else to say.
She shrugged. "One day this will all fall apart. I just know it. Those ass knobs can't stay on the throne forever."
"I can't say I've ever heard anyone use the term 'ass knob'," I commented with a small smile of amusement.
She sent me a sly smirk. "I've had plenty of time to come up with names to call them."
"Miss Robinson." It was a man standing at the barred wall. He had on a mask that was shaped like the skull of a cow and a hooded crimson robe that covered the rest of him. Dread formed a rock in my stomach as I realized the mask was a real skull. I could only see his eyes glowing a bright yellow. They didn't make me feel any less fearful. "It's time for your trial."
