Chapter Six

I blew out a breath as I swung my bag over my shoulder. It’s been a month since the whole hospital incident. I’ve been avoiding Josh as much as possible. I get nightmares often now—sometimes I get good dreams, I remember the field with Christian, but it’s mostly the dark gloom that Sebastian brought to my paradise. I’ve almost completely convinced myself that the whole scenario was a dream—almost. Getting back into my old routine had been difficult at first—but I was getting the hang of it. This morning my brain felt like mush—my body knew what it needed to do but for some reason my brain couldn’t keep up. I felt as though I was watching myself from afar. My car wasn’t working so I decided instead of calling one of my friends for a ride, I’d just walk. My dad had refused to let me ride with Josh—which I was thankful for. When I reached school people were flooding it, the parking lot was full, and the bell was about to ring. I skipped going to my locker and booked it straight to my first period class.

“You look extremely unhappy,” my best friend Belle commented. “And while we’re on the subject of unhappiness, Josh is devastated that you’re avoiding him—and don’t think he hasn’t noticed, because he has—everyone has.”

“I’m not in the mood to talk about him, Belle,” I said almost automatically. Every day at some point Belle brings up Josh and I say this. I’m tired of hearing it.

“C’mon, Chastity, Josh is your boyfriend. You love him,” Belle pressed.“You always say you don’t want to talk about him. I don’t understand what your problem is. The car crash was an accident—it wasn’t at all Josh’s fault—“

“It’s not about the car crash,” I interrupted, shaking my head. It’s about Christian and the dream.

“Then what the hell is it about?”

“Miss Moore, would you please inform me as to why you are speaking at this moment?” Mr. Harling asked.

            “Sorry, Mr. Harling,” she muttered.

He looked between the two of us before his eyes scanned over the now silent class. “Now on to your assignment.”

Two hours later Belle and I walked down the hall, towards the cafeteria. “Chastity!” a voice called from behind us. My eyes widened and Belle’s hand grasped my arm before I could bolt.

When Josh’s loud footsteps stopped behind us Belle spun around, bringing me with her. She smiled brightly at him. “Josh! Great to see you! How’s your morning been?”

Josh’s eyes met mine. “Fine. Hey, Chas, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you…how are you? I mean we haven’t—“

“I’m fine,” I shrugged. “Not much has been happening with me. I’ve just been trying to get back to my old routine.”

“Have you been avoiding me, Chastity?” he blurted. His cheeks turned slightly pink as he assessed my reaction.

I sighed. “No…I’ve just been…” I shook my head. “I’m just going through some stuff right now and I just...”
