Sara had managed to fall asleep and she got up at 5:45
and quickly got dressed. She threw on a green shirt with a bear pawprint on it- her dad got it for her a year ago and she loved it. She made herself a bowl of cereal and ate it while she waited for Alec to arrive."I'm leaving!" Alec yelled to his parents and older brother.
"Woah, wait for me pipsqueak. I'm dropping you off at school today, remember?" Nate replied.
"I have plans. And I'm leaving. You can drop he off another time, okay?" Stated Alec as he opened the door.
"I'm not dealing with this crap again, Alec. You're getting in the car and you're going to shut up, got it?" Nate demanded as he took a step toward his brother.
"Make me."
Sara sighed and looked at the clock. 6:25. Alec was 10 minutes late. Sara sighed and grabbed her phone and was about to text Alec when she heard a knock on the door. 'Finally,' she thought as she got up and walked over to the door. What she opened the door to see something that surprised her.
"Alec? What happened to you?" Sara exclaimed, looking at the bruises that covered Alec's face and neck and the blood dripping from his nose.
"It's, uh, nothing. Let's just go," alec said bluntly as he stepped out of Sara's way.
Sara didn't say anything and stepped out of the house with a sigh, closing the door and locking it before they began to walk."So... What happened to you?" Sara mumbled as she glanced at Alec who was walking at her side.
Alec wiped the blood from his nose and avoided the conversation, "so, you said you had a nightmare?"
"Oh, uh, yeah..." Sara mumbled "there was a room. I couldn't tell where I was but it- it was covered in blood," she felt her eyes begin to burn, "and the blood wasn't mine. And then the walls started closing and I couldn't breath," her vision became blurry with tears, "and I saw my- my brother... But he was..." She trailed off as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"I see..." Alec mumbled and looked down at Sara.
Sara wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt and the next thing she knew Alec had bent down and hugged her.
"It's alright. It was just a nightmare," Alec mumbled as he held her, "you'll be fine, alright?"Sara nodded, blushing slightly as Alec pulled away from her with a smile, "thanks, Alec," she mumbled.
The bus pulled up and they got on. They sat in the same seat as before and Sara asked Alec once more, "what happened to you Alec? You look horrible,"
Alec sighed before responding, "my brother isn't the nicest person ever... I was supposed to ride to school with him today but he's kind of a jerk and I didn't want to so this happened," he gestured to the bruises on his face and chuckled, "you're lucky I like you or I would have ditched you today,"
Sara looked at him, frowning, "seriously, Alec? You should have just gone with him! I don't want to see you get hurt over a stupid nightmare I had... I could have told you at lunch or something," she sighed, "what all did he do? Did he just punch you or what?"
"Yeah... That's it," Alec sighed and looked out the window.
"Alec?" Sara mumbled and Alec looked over at her, his eyebrow quirked. "I want to know more about you. Like your backstory I guess. I mean I want to hang out with you more but I don't really know that much about you," Sara stated, staring at him.
"You don't really wanna know," Alec said sternly, "but I guess since you'll probably pester me about it all day until I tell you, fine." Alec sighed before continuing, "well my grandparents both got really sick when I was about three and they passed away when I was four. When I was 8 my house caught on fire and I made it out..." He stopped and took a deep breath, "my parents weren't so lucky. Right after the fire I got put in a foster home and a few months later I got my first foster parents. We lived in a rough neighborhood and my 'parents' weren't the best... They always grounded me and the guy always kept losing his jobs. He was an alcoholic and he beat me and his wife sometimes when he was drunk. When I was 10 I left that house and now I'm here, I'm 15 and I'm with a new family..." He looked out the window to hide the tears welling up in his eyes.
Sara sat there silently. She had no clue what to do, really. She blurted out without thinking, "your new family... How do they treat you?"
Alec avoided the question by pointing out that they arrived at school. They got out and sat in the gym before heading to their first period class.
Alec still avoided the question, his new family was worse than the old one. He was yelled at constantly, his brother beat him up all the time, and his parents were even worse... But he didn't want to tell Sara that. He just wanted her to stop asking and leave the subject alone, but she didn't.
"So?" Sara questioned, "are you going to tell me or what?"
Alec sighed, and shook his head, "I don't want to talk about it," he said as he turned away from her, opening his bag and talking something out of it. The bell rang and he handed Sara the paper, "have this," he mumbled and walked away. Sara looked down at the paper. It was a drawing.
