After a long flight from New York to Guadalajara, Elisa grabbed the backpack she brought with her from the compartment above her seat on the airplane and headed out to the airport's exit.

"Disculpe, me puede llevar a este pueblo en Valle de Bravo? (Excuse me, can you take me to this village in Valle de Bravo?)" she implored various different taxi drivers.

All of them replied with the same response, explaining how it is very dangerous to be traveling on the roads or how it was too hidden away.

Elisa let out a deep exhale after her continued desperate attempts at finding a way to get to her destination.

"What am I even doing here? I just had to be so curious about my mother's past..." she thought to herself as she threw her backpack down against the floor outside of the airport.

As she slowly raised her gaze toward a parking garage, she abruptly grabbed her backpack back up from the floor and ran toward the garage. The garage was a small car rental structure. She was filled with determination and curiosity, she was willing to find the truth, no matter what or how long it would take.

Arriving at the rental structure, she asked the employee sitting at the main desk if she could rent a car for a week.

"May I see your ID and license, please? Where will you be traveling to?" the employee asked.

Handing him her ID and license, she replied, "I'm headed to Valle de Bravo. It's where my father lives...".

The employee paused for a bit as he typed her information into his computer.

"Ah. I see. You have to be careful, especially driving at night alone. It's really dangerous around here. There's been a lot of cartels kidnapping foreigner."He warned her as he handed back her ID and license.

"I can handle myself pretty well, I have a knife on me just in case," she reassured him.

The employee began to chuckle.

"W-what is he laughing at???" she wondered as she analyzed him.

"That will surely warn off dangerous criminals around here," he said sarcastically.

"Here are the keys to the car, you'll have the car for a week. In case you're wondering. I have registered your info in our system in case you decide not to bring back the car in one piece. "

"Thanks"

"One last thing...Make sure you take the main roads, I was serious about the cartels and kidnappings. Especially now that the U.S. special forces are after the powerful Mexican cartel, Los Diamantes." he uttered.

"Thanks, ill make sure to look out for them," she replied in a monotone and proceeded to head out toward her rental car.

Three hours in and Elisa began to feel her eyes get heavy as she hadn't slept in almost 8 hours. Suddenly bright headlights blinded her, causing her to compose herself. As she drove closer, there seemed to be a line of vehicles stopped. There were black trucks, about four, parked with their headlights on high. There were men with military guns wearing balaclavas stopping by every vehicle and looking at their documents. She began to panic as her thoughts began to take over.

"Maybe it's just Mexican police doing routine stops...I need to stay calm and blend in or else they'll take me out for good."  she thought to herself as her palms got sweaty.
