It was a summer morning in New York when I finally decided to apply for an internship at Delreas Towers. The place was a huge building with about a billion windows and the classic Delreas star at the top. It was one of the tallest buildings in New York and it was impossible to miss. The place was owned by Mark Delreas, but it would soon be passed down to his seemingly perfect son. His name was Gabriel and he was well...astonishing. He had perfect grades, perfect facial features, he had every government official in the palm of his hand, and he was about to inherit a company that stock sharers had killed for. This boy had the world in his buffered hand. The most amazing thing is, he's just turning 20.
I sighed deeply as a city bus passed my stop with Mark and Christian Delreas's chisled faces on them. The dark skined, older woman beside me sighed dreamily.
"That was almost my husband, you know." she said, staring nowhere in particular.
"That..."
"Sucks? I know honey!" she said with a laugh.
After she finally settled down, she leaned back on our blue bench at the stop and grinned to herself. By the look in her eyes, you could tell that she was reliving old, sweet memories. Suddenly, her face turned sorrowful and she stared at me with big, brown eyes for what seemed like minutes. I slowly scooted over an inch or two, debating in my head whether or not this woman was a nut job.
"I bet you're wondering how a nice looking man like him could have loved a nasty looking girl like me..." she mumbled.
I glanced around nervously for any signs of a bus. There wasn't a bus within five miles of me. At this rate, I could have walked to where I was going. As I glanced around, I caught a glimpse of her outfit. It was...unique. Truthfully, I wouldn't believe that Mark Delreas could have found interest in her. She wore a rainbow striped dress that stopped at her knees. Her dark thighs squished out beneath her and her purple bandana was nearly ripped to shreds. Her hair was in brown dreadlocks that turned blonde near the bottom. The idea of her and Mark Delreas was certainly absurd.
"You and Mark Delreas doesn't seem like such a bad combo." I lied.
She starting laughing again. She doubled over and started wheezing. When she didn't come up I leaned over to help her up. She wiped a tear from her eye and just grinned and shook her head to herself.
"Woo child! Me and Mark Delreas?! Have you lost your mind?" she exclaimed.
I know this walking rainbow wasn't trying to say that I was the crazy one!
"Am I missing something?" I asked, getting a little irritated.
"Not Mark Delreas! His son!" I nearly choked on air at this statement.
"You and Gabriel Delreas? He's just turning 20!" I exclaimed, causing other people to stare at me with a startled expression.
"Black don't crack honey!" the woman said smugly, flipping her locks over her beefy shoulder.
I bit my lip to keep from laughing. Maybe she didn't crack, but she certainly inflated. An awkward silence fell over us for a few moments. She seemed to regain her sanity and turned towards me.
"So where you headed?" she asked.
"Delreas Towers." I replied simply, staring ahead.
Her eyes widened and she grinned from ear to ear. I sighed, feeling another laughing fit coming on. I tapped my toe, stretching my neck to see if the bus was near. The woman never laughed. She seemed go be lost in thought again. Finally, the bus came and I stood up. Before I could climb up the small steps, the woman grabbed my upper arm firmly.I turned around to protest but stopped upon seeing her sad expression. She looked up at me seriously and loosened her grip.
