PROLOGUE

Isabella Vitiello
17 years

I was sprawled on the couch with my headphones on while reading my new favorite book, a thriller I got for my birthday, I hadn't even had time to take off the dress and boots I was wearing.  I had just returned from my cousin Amo's wedding party with the worst woman he could choose to marry, no one was very happy with this union except Cressida and her family who would now carry the surname Vitiello.

I couldn't stand her before when I was still his fiancée, now I can't stand it anymore. Cressida never minced words to try to make me feel bad, I really didn't want her to be with Amo. But unfortunately my cousin is suffering a lot from his immature choices in the past, however good his intentions were.

The mood today was strange and a little tense, not just because of the wedding in its awkward moment, but something bigger was going on and I could tell by the way Dad fidgeted and checked his cell phone.  Maybe that's because we hosted strangers at the wedding, as my cousin Amo will be Capo, we had to open the doors to receive foreigners from another mafia, the camorra.  They gave me the creeps.  On the one hand this was good because I could see my cousin Aurora and my uncles, Fabiano and Leona.

An alert chime rang on Dad's cell phone and he quickly checked it, sliding the screen and putting the cell phone in his pocket. My mom, who was lying on the other side of the couch, stood up, raising an eyebrow, exchanging a look with Dad that she couldn't decipher. She snorted shaking her head, I took off my headphones and closed my book.

"What's going on dad?" You've been acting weird since you got back from Amo's party." I furrowed my brows in concern and fisted my hands in the skirt of my dress.

"There's nothing Isa, just stay here with your mother, I have matters to attend to"he kissed the top of my head and took his knives putting them in the holster on his chest.

"Something dangerous?" he said when he saw his mounted knives.

"Nothing to worry about, why don't you go check on your pets upstairs?" he smiled nervously, I knew he wasn't worried about lilo or nyx, he wanted to talk to mom alone so I obeyed him.

I quickly climbed the stairs, jumping two at a time, and entered my room. Lilo was in her cage and Nyx was crawling across my massive bookcase. I picked her up and put her around my neck, she was also agitated, she seemed to understand the mood. I left Nyx in her little box and watched Lilo in her cage. Nyx was still trying to get used to the room and the people, it was very difficult to win her over, but little by little she adapted. Lilo, from the beginning, felt at home.

I fed them both and threw myself on the bed continuing my book and I didn't even realize how time passed, everything happened so fast the last thing I managed to assimilate was a bang coming from downstairs and the alarm going off.

I jumped out of bed immediately and ran to lock the door, I didn't hear a sound from Mom, and my heart was racing, it felt like I was going to have a heart attack at any moment. My first reflex was to think of Dad, he came out and looked worried, something bad is going on.

I took Lilo's cage and Nyx's box and hid them in the closet behind the various clothes. With trembling hands I typed to Mom

: What is happening?
mommy?

Nothing, no response. I grabbed a dagger I had stashed in my chest under the bed and slipped it into my boot. I opened the door slowly, poking my head halfway out to scan the hallway. Nobody.

I leaned against the wall and walked down the hall dragging my back along the wall moving in silence. I made my way down the stairs silently and stopped short when
