The group had walked onwards towards the coast. Originally, the CIA planned for the lot of them to camp out on Ghost Island until they could come up with a proper plan to eradicate the anomaly. And so far, they hadn't come up with anything.
Blinky couldn't stop glancing at Sue. She kept peeking over at him before lowering her gaze and turning away. Yum-Yum, thank goodness, didn't seem to notice the tension between the two of them. Course, she was too busy trying to inch closer to Jr without her father noticing. The red ghost was beyond stressed out today.
Soon, as the sun began to set, the group made camp for the night next to a mountainside. This time around, Pac-Man had moved his family a little farther from the ghosts. Good riddance, Blinky thought. Then he tucked Yum-Yum into the green blanket. "There you go, sweetie pie..." he told her. "Nice and warm."
Yum-Yum yawned, smiling. "Daddy? Can I play with that nice lady tomorrow?"
"What nice lady?" Blinky asked.
His daughter pointed at Sue, who was staring into the flames of their campfire. After a moment's hesitation, Blinky replied, "Of course you can. Now...get some rest."
Yum-Yum sighed, closing her eyes as Blinky showered her in kisses. When he looked up, Sue had a slight smile on her face. Blinky didn't smile back. He wordlessly sat next to her and stared into the flames as well.
The fire crackled and popped.
"You look good," Sue said.
Blinky was quiet. Then he said, "Thanks. You do too."
More silence. Then Sue looked at him. Blinky looked back.
The purple ghost murmured, "You did a good job, you know...caring for her. I know how awkward this must be for you. It...certainly is for me. But...I will tell you one thing: I never should have left."
Blinky snorted. "No, you shouldn't have. Can't be helped now."
Sue seemed ashamed. She clasped her hands together and stared at the ground.
"11 years, Sue. How are you going to make up for 11 years of no contact, no explaination, no check-ins? Nothing like that?" Blinky asked. He felt rage in his heart toward her, but it was combined with feelings of longing and wishful hopes.
"I don't even begin to know how, Blinky..." she said. "I don't even know how to tell her that I'm her mother. She's bound to ask questions, and...I'm not sure either of you would like the answers to them."
Blinky clenched and unclenched his fists. "I'm not just talking about us, Sue. I'm talking about Yum-Yum. How could you, in good conscience, just LEAVE her like that? And, being as honest as you can, lie to my face about the pregnancy?"
