I woke up to the sun shining through the curtains and groaned. My head was pounding and I was still in yesterday's clothes. Last night I really made up for all those missed birthdays, I've never been so drunk in my life.

"Morning sunshine!" A cheery voice spoke, "How are you feeling?"

"Like a wet dog crawled into my mouth and had puppies." I croaked out opening one eye to see Demi sat on the bed looking sympathetic. "And like a hundred tribal warriors are bashing drums in my head."

Demi chuckled at me as she held out some painkillers and a glass of water. I took them from her once I had sat up and quickly took the painkillers, sipping the water. I glanced at the clock and realised that I had slept most of the day away and groaned again.

"What's up?" Demi asked as she took the empty glass from me.

"I need to get my stuff packed and ready for tomorrow. And I need to dye my hair." I sighed running my hands through my brightly coloured hair.

"Funny you should mention dying your hair." Demi said cheerfully, "Lucas asked me to give this to you and said Jennifer dropped it off." She pulled out a box of hair dye from behind her.

"Black?" I hummed in approval as I gave the box a once over. "Can you put this on for me?"

"Sure, when do you want me to do it?"

"Now, please, then I can grab a shower to wash it off before packing my stuff. Is that okay for you?" I asked and Demi nodded taking the dye out of the box.

Once the dye was ready to wash off I got into the shower. Once I was done I threw on some sweat pants and a loose fitting t-shirt before moving towards my closet. I pulled out my army bag and military uniforms from the closet and saw my old surfboard sitting in the back. I placed my bag and uniforms down on my floor and carefully pulled out my surfboard.

I lay it across my bed as I pulled a black marker pen from my bedside table drawer. I quickly wrote on the board before signing it and wrapping it in brown parcel paper, writing on the paper and setting it to one side.

I collected all of my army things and set to work ironing, organising and packing, ensuring that I had one set of uniform hung up ready for me to wear. I set my alarm for five in the morning as a military vehicle was picking me up at six thirty to return me to base.

I was sat on my bed finishing up with polishing my boots when there was a knock on my bedroom door.

"Yeah?" I called out to the closed door and the door opened.

"Hey," the voice spoke softly and I looked up to see Demi stood in the doorway, "Your mum asked me to come and get you because the food is ready."

I smiled as I placed my polished boots on the floor and got up from the bed. As I reached the door I offered my arm to Demi for her to hold.

"Well then, let's not keep everyone waiting." I grinned at her holding in a laugh as I put on a posh accent, "Onwards we go to the bountiful feast that awaits!"

"My, I feel so privileged to be escorted to a feast by someone as gentlemanly as yourself." Demi replied in a posh British accent.

We both burst out laughing as we walked into the kitchen and sat down to eat the roast chicken dinner my mother had prepared. The atmosphere at the table was a tense and sad one as the chicken dinner symbolised my last night at home, very much one of our many family traditions.

I pushed food around on my plate as everyone made idle chit-chat around me. Usually, I couldn't wait to get away from home because it meant getting away from Amber. Now, I didn't want to go, I didn't want to leave my family and I really didn't want to leave Demi.

My feelings for Demi had only gotten stronger over the last few weeks but I was grateful to just have her as a friend in my life and I wasn't ready to let her go. She had already asked me to Skype her whenever I could and I had made a promise to do just that.

"What time are you leaving, lil' one?" My mum asked from across the table.

"The car will be here at six-thirty." I replied, pushing my plate away from me.

"Something wrong with the food, sis?" Lucas asked looking at me concerned.

"I'm just not feeling hungry right now, sorry." I mumbled, picking at the table with my nails.

"I know you love your career Carmen, but, maybe this could be your last tour....y'know, just for a little while? We miss you when you're away and it would be awesome to spend more time together as a family." Antonio spoke quietly from across the table.

I looked up to meet his gaze and could see the tears shining in his eyes, mirroring what mine were doing. I nodded my head and cleared my throat, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill.

"I'll see what I can do." I replied, afraid to say much more incase I started crying.

Once everyone else had finished eating we all went our separate ways to change clothes before we sat down to watch some movies. Demi had left to go to her room and I waited for a few minutes before following her, I knocked on the door and waited patiently for it to open.

Demi stood to one side allowing me to enter while giving me a look of confusion. I walked in silently before turning round and speaking.

"We're going to watch some films if you'd like to join us?" I asked quietly.

"Thank you." Demi spoke out as she crossed the room quickly and gave me a bone crushing hug. "Please keep yourself safe out there!" She whispered against my neck.

I nodded as I wrapped my arms round her and held her just as tightly. "I'll be okay." I whispered back in reassurance.

We left her room together and spent the night watching films with my family before we all went to bed, Demi came to my room tonight instead of hers and we quickly fell asleep.

I woke up to my alarm and switched it off, noticing that Demi wasn't in bed with me. I got myself dressed into my uniform slowly.

I pulled on an army green vest top before pulling my trousers on and doing them up with my belt. I took my shirt off the hanger and pulled it on before picking up my Velcro badges and beret and making my way to my full length mirror.

I carefully placed all my badges, including my Sergeant stripes, into their correct places on my shirt. I brushed some fluff off my beret before placing it on my head and giving my uniform a once over. I turned towards my door when I heard a quiet knock on it.
