I walked beside Carmen as we headed back to the bar, she walked in silence looking a little sad whilst holding one arm across her ribs. By the time we had reached the bar the sun had dried her clothes off and she poured herself a drink once we had entered.

"Want a drink?" She asked from the bar as I stood admiring the piano.

"Surprise me." I responded running my hands over the smooth wood as I sat on the piano bench.

I started playing around with some of the keys on the piano before coming up with a melody. I got lost in the music I was playing, forgetting where I was and started to sing a song I had recently written but not yet recorded or published. The song started softly with me singing along quietly.

I'm losing myself trying to compete,
With everyone else instead of just being me.
Don't know where to turn,
I've been stuck in this routine.
I need to change my ways,
Instead of always being weak.

I played the piano slightly louder, striking the keys a little bit harder whilst the level of my voice raised too.

I don't wanna be afraid,
I wanna wake up feeling beautiful...today.
And know that I'm okay,
'Cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways.
You see, I just wanna believe in me.

I started playing and humming softly again before adding some attitude to my voice as I made my voice and the piano gradually get louder through the next verse and chorus.

The mirror can lie doesn't show you what's inside.
And it can tell you you're full of life,
It's amazing what you can hide,
Just by putting on a smile.

I don't wanna be afraid,
I wanna wake up feeling beautiful...today.
And know that I'm okay,
'Cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways.
You see, I just wanna believe in me.

I'm quickly finding out,
I'm not about to break down,
Not today.

I got softer with my singing and playing again and continued the song with my eyes closed.

I guess I always knew,
That I had all the strength to make it through.

I hit the keys hard once again making the piano louder and singing with more emotion.

Not gunna be afraid,
I'm going to wake up feeling beautiful...today.
And know that I'm okay,
'Cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways.
You see, now, now I believe in me.

Now I believe in me.

I finished the song softly and jumped when someone started clapping. I started blushing as Carmen made her way over to me carrying her drink and a drink for me, a strawberry cider.

"That was really good, is it a new song?" She asked taking a seat next to me on the piano bench as she played a few notes.

"Yeah, it's not finished yet, it needs something....more. I just can't figure it out." I replied.

"You need some background instruments." She shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. "Play and sing it again, I'll see if I can put anything with it!" Carmen ordered excitedly as she moved over the drum kit on the stage,

For the next hour or so I replayed my song and Carmen would join in on drums and guitar and it was definitely what the song needed at certain points.

I pulled my phone out and recorded the bits Carmen came up with so that when I went home I could record it and perform it as my coming out song.

We had loads of fun doing all the recording and performing and Carmen even joined in on the singing too. She had an amazing voice that gave me goosebumps every time I heard it. Once we had finished with that we sat on a sofa near the fireplace of the bar and drank our third drink.

"So, do you write many songs, Carmen?" I asked, intrigued by this beauty sat beside me.

"I've written some, I'm not very good at it to be honest." She replied putting her feet up on the table in front of us.

"Maybe I can help? Can I hear one I haven't heard yet?" I asked turning to face her and smiling brightly.

"I actually haven't got any new ones. I don't have much inspiration currently." She responded distantly like she was hiding something.

"Well, maybe inspiration will strike soon? You have some time to think of stuff while your ribs are healing." I glanced at the clock and realised it was nearly dinner time, "Come on, let's go and cook dinner for everyone."

"I can't cook." Carmen said as I pulled her up off the couch, giving her an incredulous look as she had been cooking that very morning. "I mean, I can do a fry up but that's my limit."

"Lucky for you, I'm a damn fine cook!" I chuckled as I pulled her into the kitchen. "And I'm going to teach you how."

I searched through the pantry and fridge/freezer to see what I could rustle up and found the perfect ingredients for a stir fry.

I set Carmen the task of cutting up some vegetables while I diced garlic, onions and chicken and started frying it. Once it had browned I looked over to see Carmen struggling with the peppers, turning the heat down on the pan I moved over to her.

"You're doing it wrong." I commented, holding back a laugh at the partially decimated vegetable in her hand.

"How can anyone cut a vegetable wrong?" She shot back, rolling her eyes.

"Well, you're doing a pretty good job at it!" I laughed, "Here, let me help."

I grabbed her hand that the knife was in and guided it to a fresh pepper in my hand. I made her cut the top and bottom of the pepper off and remove the seeds before helping her cut the pepper into slices.

"See, it's easy." I smiled at her as she turned her head to me, "Now, put those in the pan."

She did as I told her to for the rest of the meal preparation and we laughed as we worked together. Her family had arrived home just as the stir fry was ready to be served and we dished it up together.

"Wow, guys, this looks amazing!" Antonio exclaimed as he dug in.

Everyone followed suit and complimented the meal we had prepared before they each went their separate ways to shower, leaving Carmen and I washing the dishes. We soon had the kitchen cleaned up and both went to shower before I headed to bed for an early night, jet lag still affecting me.
